Tony Basilio evidently went on a rant on his radio show yesterday about being shut out from any interviews with Cuonzo Martin by Tom Satkowiak, UT's Sports Information Director. Basilio claims that a number of local media members are having the same difficulties, a problem, Basilio claims, is bad for CCM because he needs to be out in the public selling his program to not only recruits, but also to fans.

I know a number of you guys can't stand his show (Basilio's). I for one, find it entertaining. He's a homer media member and makes no apologies for his biases. We've all heard the criticisms for his "insider" info on the coaching searches, etc. So let's skip them for this thread. I want to know do you agree with Tony on his point that CCM should be out in the media garnering public support or do you care less about what he does with the media as long as his focus is putting a winning product on the court?

His angst in his blog today is quite entertaining, imo.

Would it really do much good to sell his program to places, like Basilio's show? How many people actually listen to his show? Winning sells the program.

I could care less if Cuonzo does any radio interviews as long as the spoof I heard on AA's show today is posted online somewhere. That was the funniest 15 minutes of local radio that I've heard in a long time.

basillo got what he asked for. He has been a manic depressive fan with a microphone.
I think if he were more professional then he would get more of what he wants.

Basilio has done exactly what to earn the right to get exclusives with CCM? Basilio is a flaming loser. I have met him a few times, and is a pompous, arrogant gamecock... He has no idea what professionalism is, and I could get more accurate sports info from Norm McDonald's new show

I can't help but recall this exact same gripe about another coach by the local media approximately 12-14 months ago...........

Same crap was said last year when DD wouldn't give people access and the media *****ed. Man's got a big job to do. He doesn't want to talk to your ass right now, so deal, and he doesn't need any bs miscommunication or poorly relayed message from some clown like Basilio, while he's got a job to do. Yeah, thats a runon sentence. DD started dealing and those little one liners that pissed off some of you, suddenly turned into total collages of one liners and threads dedicated to them. I'm not saying Q is going to be like that, but give me a break.

I think Basilo has a legit beef. He made some comments regarding the Daniel West situation that UT didn't like. Tony Jones was on the show often, but Pearl never seemed to be on. Now it makes sense.

In this case, Basilio went through the proper channels to get an interview with Martin 6 weeks ago and has not been granted any time.

I don't know how many listeners he has, but you don't remain on the air 20 years if no one listens.

Even if there is a problem, you go to Tom and try and hash it out. Tony went to the public pretending to be a determinant of CCM's success here in Knoxville, which is idiotic. Not to mention the fact that he isn't entitled to a damn thing.

Going over and talking to the guy might have been a better way to handle it, sure...That said, Tennessee has problems with PR, this is just another example.

How is this bad PR?

Martin has been all over the southeast with the Big Orange Caravan except for when he had prior committments.

I like Tony as a guy, but he needs to accept his role in the broadcasting world.

It's just makes UT look petty. They have a new coach and a guy with a local sports show wants to get him on the air for a few minutes. What's the big deal? 10 minutes and a phone is all that's required.

You can stay on the air when your competition is one Jimmy Hyams who after I left the office yesterday was talking about how we needed to sign a big in this class... right after I had just gotten through a 3 page thread on Yummy Macaroni's commitment...

Finally a caller called in with less than 5 minutes on the show letting him know we had a big commit that day and Hyams' said he was going to have to check into that and that he had not heard anything. Heck, Griff is in fast pitch when compared to Hyams
