Tony Harris being called a "punk"

I think most people dont know that connotation, and no I dont think it is reckless if the intended meaning was clear. That term does not have a widely accepted or understood meaning of homosexual even if it may have that etymology, and therefore the writer should not be expected to know all the slang meanings of a term if they are not using it that way, and the content and context of the article bears that out. Its not like we are talking about terms like "gay" "fruit" or "***" all of which have non slanderous meanings but have a dominant connotation as a derogatory term for homosexuals. "punk" would be akin to me calling you a pig if you are a messy eater and you protesting that I called you a derogatory name for a cop. You response would be unwarranted because it is clear that that is not my meaning, but you rather chose to take it out of context.

I guess so. Everyone should stop using Punk because convicted criminals use it differently than the rest of society.

Shouldn't be using terms/slang anyway if you don't know what the word means. I guarantee you, most of you here are probably very lucky that you haven't called the wrong person a punk or "punking them out". That is what happens when mainstream journalists or media celebs try to use street slang and have no clue what they are talking about.

And not just convicted criminals or hip hop culture know about this. This term has been around for years... long before rap/hip hop went mainstream. Even the caller talking to Dave Hooker (an older gentleman that didn't sound like a fan of 50 Cent or NWA) knew exactly what that word meant.

Just something for you guys and the media to think about whenever you throw around words like punk...

Merriam-Webster says I'm right, along with about a thousand more sources...

punk definition - Dictionary - MSN Encarta

That term has been around for ages (way before hip hop). For a media guy to use that term and not what what is really means or where it comes from is reckless and he deserved criticism.

So let's see. "Punk = homosexual" is about the fourth-place slang definition in both your sources; Encarta even lists it as "archaic." If there were any way to collect, I'd be happy to wager $100 that if you asked 100 people on the street what "punk" means, you wouldn't find two of them that would give you "homosexual" first. Yet a media guy who says the term using its actual dictionary meaning is "reckless"? GMAFB.

This is really weak, TVA, even for you.

Go to the hood and ask 100 people what a punk is.

The only PUNK I know of is a weak perosn who will sell someone out to save his own skin.

Evidently, Rasputin is the only one UP on street slang.

You are so hood using internet sources to reference "street talk".

As I said earlier I played on sports teams my entire life with people from various backgrounds. Never one time did anyone (White guys or black) use punk as a word for gay. I've played AAU all over been to camps in different states and never heard punk used that way.

I've been in situations where the phrase "punked out" was used an nobody, white or black, took as meaning gay.

Oh well you are such a punk TVA.

From dictionary.com:
term /tɜrm/

5. one of two or more divisions of a school year, during which instruction is regularly provided.

How reckless of you to use the term term and not know what it really means or where it comes from.

Im sure the people who make those dictionaries are the kind of people you should be asking about street slang. But 99.999999999 percent of the time someone says punk they are not calling someone gay.

All this time, when I called people punks I thought I was calling them this
any prepared substance, usually in stick form, that will smolder and can be used to light fireworks, fuses, etc.
