Top 10 biggest recruiting busts at UT since 2000

Scout had him as the #1 player in the country, 247 and Rivals both #6 nationally. He did virtually nothing here other than “anchor” 2 of the worst run defenses in school and SEC history. 5 star who played like a 2 or 3 star and who rarely had a positive impact on our defensive play.

As Austin Price said last week, if KMac had been on one of Fulmer’s teams, he’d have taken 1, maybe 2 looks at him and promptly moved over to offensive guard because he just didn’t have the ability to play DT at a high SEC level.....which is something KMac never did.

Given the incredibly high expectations he came to Knoxville with, he was absolutely a bust.

So many of Butch’s “Bricks”

1 Dillon Bates
2 Kyle Phillips
3 Khalil McKenzie
4 Preston Williams

Too early... so long as he continues to contribute, I think he's flashed enough to stay in the disappointing category and not quite a bust.

If a player gets on the field and actually contributes, I don't think he can be called a bust. A disappointment maybe, but not a bust. A bust is a player expected to be good, even great, but fails so incredibly it's like he was never there. Someone like a Chris Donald or, at least to this point, a Dillon Bates.

To me each players bustness is measured differently...

To your point, if you have a top 10 5* kid play 3-4 years yet "contributes" at an underwhelming level, ala Kahlil, he's could easily be considered a bust.

Similarly, if you have a 4* kid that never see the field, ala Chris Donald, he's a bust. A 4* kid could play at the same level as the underwhelming 5* kid did and not be considered a bust because his rating wasn't initially as high.

It's the gap between recuiting ranking influenced expectations and on/off the field results that is the true indicator of ones bustness.

Donald was the #1 lb in the country, and #18 overall. He wasn’t injured, just didn’t have the mentality for college ball.

I don’t count injured players as a bust. They are our wounded warriors. VFLs for sure! Inky Johnson a bust?

Looking back at that 07 class. On paper looked so good. Five 5* 11 4* A few contributors, and Eric Berry. I was so sure that was the class that would put us back on top. Hindsight you know.

Makes me not as worried about Georgia’s class this year.

Yes Kmac and B. Brown were good players, but when you are considered the best back to come out of HS in the past five years; or the no. player in the nation by some you would expect much more. Especially after you saw how no. 94 helped Bama win the past two games, not to mention Damian Harris.

Some of the so-called busts in this thread were recruited by none other than Lyle "Butch" Jones. So, in reality, we will probably never know if they were busts, disappointments, or merely not coached properly by the "Best Staff in America."

Every coach has busts. Coach Fulmer had more than anyone but that was because he was recruiting so many big time players. By sheer numbers the more high level guys you recruit the more the chance of having busts.

Brian Darden
Michael Munoz (even though he was hampered by injuries if I remember correctly)

Michael Munoz, what in the world? I mean he wasn't as good as his dad, but my goodness how many lineman were/are as good as Anthony Munoz.

Honestly, Michael Munoz and Aaron Sears were probably the best Tackles we had during that decade.

Not even close Brown came in as the top player in the country and was gone like a fart in a tornado.:thud:

I know it's all speculation, but I think Brown would have had a good career if Lane would have never left. He looked good as a freshman, but Hardesty was on another level that season.
