Top 20 Vols of All Time?

Ellis being behind Houston, Grunfeld, and White makes me laugh. Reggie Johnson behind Chris Lofton is funny, too.

Ellis ahead of Grunfeld? Maybe based on pro career, but Ernie was better at TN. Yes, I saw both of them play - in fact, played in some pickup games with Dale. Dale's outside shot was not very good his first two years at TN. I probably would list Ellis at #3 and I agree Reggie Johnson is too low on the list. I struggle with Houston's place on the list because he played on a really bad TN team. I never saw Justus or Widby play.

I have issues with both names on #20. I would put CJ Black over both of those. I am probably alone on that but I can't believe Hamer or Harris would be in top 20

I heard Ellis was outstanding his entire Tennessee career, despite being forced to play out of position and constantly double- or sometimes even triple-teamed. Oh wait, I didn't hear about it from somebody else, I watched it.

Houston scored more points than Bernard King, too. Why don't you just bump him all the way up to first?

To quote my father: "you don't have to be the jockey to know who won the race". Although I might not have seen Dale Ellis in person I am fairly familiar with his career and certainly don't think putting hom of Houston is crazy by any stretch. However, to say Ellis did it facing double and triple teams Os not a good argument when comparing him to Houston. What do you think Houston was facing every night!? He was the ONLY player on the team. He is the best shooter in TN history with Lofton a distant 2nd.

Regarding your King argument, I would not put Houston ahead of him as King did not play 4 years and there was no 3 point line.

Uh, I was being facetious about that. Bernard King was a transcendent player, and would have been one of the top 20 basketball players of all time if he hadn't gotten hurt. Houston's not worthy to wash his car.

For me, Ellis/Houston comes down to this: Allan Houston was a great shooter. Dale Ellis was a great basketball player.

No one, and I repeat, NO ONE, would put Houston ahead of King on any list. The 3 point line has no effect as far as King's game was concerned. The list is small of people who might place Houston above Elllis, and it would be a list of people who didn't see Dale play.

dude got straight hammered for his list.

Never make a list. Even if you include almost all of the Vol heavyweights within + or - 5 spots of where they deserve to be and include a caveat about wanting input. You will still get murdered--especially if hatvol96 doesn't like you and makes the third post. His minions will rush in quickly. They will not disagree courteously.

I apologize to you if I hammered you on your list, but I can promise I AM NOT ONE OF HAT'S MINIONS. I've watched UT basketball longer than Hat.

Your list was too top heavy with recent players and you probably put too much weight on stats as well. Stats, for the most part, are meaningless without detail. You got most of them and at least were open to suggestions.

If I were you, I wouldn't lose any sleep over the opinions of the self-annointed experts. Most of them don't know as much as they think they do, but then again, none of us do.

The idea that someone would try to say Johnny Darden and Rodney Woods were better than Tony Harris with a straight face is mindboggling. Harris is the Casey Clausen of Tennessee basketball. He's easily the most unfairly maligned UT hoopster ever.

I agree with Hat.

The man stole the ball from me and dunked while my hand was still dribbling.

His end to end run to beat Florida is one of my favorite Vol basketball memories.

If he goes 4 for 10 instead of 1 for 10 against UNC, we reach our first Elite 8 that year instead of under Pearl.

He also had to endure a lot from Memphis folk for coming east. He and Cedrick Wilson are two guys I will always be grateful for making the trek east.

I really enjoyed the list OP. Thanks for making it! We are similar in age. I think Hamer looms large because it was so fun watching him block shots and also because he was a lone bright spot during some misery.

Yeah, there are lots of "ifs" associated with that game. The biggest one being if we had not folded up like a $2 chaise lounge with a seven point lead in the last four minutes.

Making a list is one of the only times people gloat about how old they are

That's because getting old sucks. There are very, very few good things about being 40 years old, but having been able to see Bernard King wearing a Tennessee uniform is one of them.

You people are crazy. Where is Dan Federman?

Ellis is #2 without question, IMO.

No way Ellis is ahead of Alan Houston.

Yes there is, Ellis was a better player in both college and the NBA. He was first team AA both his junior and senior seasons. He played in more All Star games in the NBA. You may not agree, which is your right, but most everyone who saw both of them say Ellis. Ernie Grunfeld was better than Houston too.

Were you born when Ellis played?
