I subscribe to a premium site for college football rumors and this came up last week... Not only that; but I've heard this around Lexington as well which gives it even more validity:

Former coaches out of work or up and coming young head and assistant coaches who will be candidates Kentucky will go for should Joker Phillips not survive 2012:

#1 - Bobby Petrino - Former UofL and Arkansas coach has a little baggage but so did John Calipari and that hasn't worked out all that bad.

#2 - Brent Pease - Former Boise State offensive coordinator was brought to The Swamp by Will Muschamp to bring back the Gators glory days of offense.

#3 - James Franklin - 1st year Vandy coach went 6 - 6 but could have easily went 8 - 4. His early recruiting is even more impressive.

Personally, I think either of the three would be a good hire for UK and I like them in the order they are in. Petrino proved he can build a program out of Louisville, would be the ultimate revenge factor against them for Pitino, and I think he would make UK more competitive in the SEC. Brent Pease has proven himself as an assistant and I think will be successful as a head coach. Lastly, James Franklin has raised a lot of eyebrows in the SEC, making Vandy instantly competitive and is a proven recruiter. I think that in the right situation Franklin would really excel as a coach.

Petrino will never happen, MB hates him. Franklin wouldn't leave Vandy (too small a sample size anyway). Pease? Who knows....

I'd like to see them stick it out with Joker, if they don't I'd like to see them take a run Tressell. Petrino is a dirtbag

You are in the minority with the whole "hoping they stick it out with joker".

I don't think that it really matters if MB likes Petrino. He wasn't exactly best friends with Cal at one point, either- to the point that the media was picking up on it. He is being pressured to hire a football coach that will turn that program around and there are not many people out there that will do that in the short-term. He is going to have to put his feelings aside on this one and quit being selfish.

If your content with hiring Brent Pease or James Franklin then you should be content with Joker Phillips.

I'd give Art Briles one of the very first calls.

Your not going to get Franklin from Vandy...and I would be VERY surprised by Petrino...

How easy would it be for people to hate Kentucky sports if they have both Calipari and Petrino? I have two degrees from there, but :finger3: at their athletics.

All they lack is John Cohen back as baseball coach, and you'd have a perfect trifecta! :)

I understand and I'm OK with that. You're never going to get an established, big name coach to come to UK without blemish. So you're choices are Tressel with a show-cause or a relatively unknown coordinator from somewhere...I think I'll take my chances with Tressel all things considered.

I’m passing on Petrino, he’s a good coach but has totally F-ed every job he’s ever had – not to mention his latest goings on. I have no idea if he’d take the job at UK if offered, if it were me and I was offered a job in the SEC after what happened and how many times I’ve screwed former employers I’d take it. You’re going to make at least 2M/yr why wouldn’t you?

As for Franklin, just because he had one good year let’s not get ahead of ourselves like this guy is Bear Bryant…Good for Vandy if they get better but let’s hold on and see what happens with a larger sample size.
