Who are your top 5 modern college basketball coaches. Here are mine:
1: Mike Krzyzewski: Won 3 and lost 3 N.C. Hard to argue with that over last 21 years.
2- Billy Donovan: Has been to 3 and won 2 N.C in the last 10 years.
3- Rick Pitino: His team won the N.C in 96 and he lost in 97. Tubby won it in 98, but lets face it; those were Rick's kids. So I count that one with Rick.
4- Tom Izzo
5- Roy Williams

Top 2 coaches on the rise:

1: Bruce Pearl- He is a great coach. He will bring UT a national championship one day. UT better pay him whatever he wants.
2: Anthony Grant- keep an eye on him. He is a Billy Donovan Deciple and took a VCU team to the turnament and did some damage.

Most overated:
Billy Gillispie: God to hear the Kentucky fans talk about this guy, you would of thought he has won the last 10 National Championships!!! The truth is that he has been to only one sweet 16. That's it!!!!! He has more DUI's than sweet 16's.

1. Coach K
2. Bobby Knight
3. Dean Smith
4. Jim Calhoun
4. Gary Williams
5. Tom Izzo- i have to put him here because his disciples are slowly starting to take over the college world.

I'm leaving out Lute I know. I'm also leaving Pitino out. I feel fine without having Lute in... I'm not sure how I can leave out Pitino. Donovan is looking in. If he can keep Florida in contention for the next few years, he makes the leap. Never have been sold on Roy Williams.

How do you leave out a guy with back to back off of the list?

After watching Billy Clyde for the last few months, this is what I can tell you about this UK program. It is akin to Alabama hiring Saban. Everybody may want to beat up on them all they can this year. Next year it ain't gonna be easy.

I'm not sure I've ever seen anything on this board that has made me laugh harder than the idea Billy Gillispie is overrated. He will win multiple National Titles at Kentucky.

Coach Pearl's squad could beat Coach Summitt's squad... :neener2: Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Pat Summitt and Lady Vols fan as well. It's just that men's basketball is much more important.

I wouldn't take ANY of the other coaches mentioned over coach Pearl. So far he has been the perfect coach for UT. I really don't know if any other coach in the country could take a dead basketball program and completely turning it around in the first season like he has. We have experts talking about UT as a final 4 contender in his 3rd year. Beat the National Champions 3 out of 4 times. Sell out a 24,000 seat arena and have a football school looking forward to basketball season in September. He might not make anyone's list, but I wouldn't trade him for any other coach.

I think I laughed harder when I saw the college football coach list that had Ferentz and Teford ranked higher than Butch Davis.

Donovan won with clearly superior talent. Prior, he lost to some sorry teams, even with clearly superior talent. He caught the perfect storm in a couple of recruiting classes and it worked for him. He will not visit those heights again. There are a lot of coaches I'd take against him with equal or near equal talent.

K and Knight without question.
Gillespie
Tubby
Williams, R
Williams, G
Izzo
Howland
Few
Felton
Kennedy
Pearl (with considerably lesser talent)
Thompson III
Calhoun

I'm sure there are plenty of others, but this is off top of my head early in the morning.

Your love of Pearl amazes me. He has infused this program with some energy, but his teams still show some problems in areas that I would expect a great coach to be able to address. What he does is play a style of ball that players love and we'll see it continue to reap recruiting rewards.

Alright, if I had to pick 5 coaches as of RIGHT NOW

1.Billy Donovan-back to back
2.Ben Howland-back to back final 4's
3.Izzo-he's been successful time after time
4.Billy G-he is a winner, and will show that at UK
5.Coach K-he's a DUkie

Pearl, Williams, Calipari, Pitino and many others there as well including Bill Self and Tim Floyd

your avatar suggests that your a hoops fan, but your choice of top coach disabused me of any positive notion I might have had regarding your awareness of the collegiate game

It does look pretty bad, but I meant as of right now. Within the last 2 years. I also left off Thad Matta.

Actually looking at your list BPV, I think you're dead on with the exception of Thad Matta not being on there. Also, I defend Donovan because he's won 2 straight national championships. There's no way you can not give him credit for that.

as of right now, donovan's still middle of the pack, at best, in the SEC

I think that Pearl, Billy G, Andy Kennedy and maybe even Stansburry are all great coaches. And I think that Gillespie and Pearl will probably win championships, maybe even Kennedy. But as of right now, Donovans accomplished the most

he has won consecutive titles and that can never be taken away, but he did it with one of the largest talent differentials, relative to the field, I've ever seen (comparable to UNLV and UCLA of old). The team was loaded AND unselfish, a very rare combo.

He'll be back to his underachieving ways now that they've moved on.

I do agree that the team was just that, a team. Very unselfish and fun to watch. Before that, his teams had been underachieving but I still thank you have to put him 1st based on recent success.

Joe Torre won what seemed like 12 WS titles in a row and wouldn't have put him first. He was hired to chaperone an enormous collection talent and he did so. I don't call that coaching genius. Ditto Phil Jackson.
