Is it just me or did the media use Tennessee through the first 8 games? It seemed like every other week we had the biggest game in the country, all the talking heads discussed us through the week. Think of how much money,views, and just traffic ESPN, cbs, and other sites used Tennessee through the first 9 games.

Now that the dust has settled and we lost to Georgia, all we have is talking heads bashing ut now, negative news, and how we don’t belong after we pretty much carried college game day and the sec this year..
If we win out, and we are left out of the top 4, that would be the most Tennessee thing ever. Anyway sorry y’all just a random thought, or rabbit hole I went down! its true tho, we freaking carried college game day and the sec this year, I mean besides us what do you have?? I’m not talking about team skill, I’m talking excitement and views. Besides us what did you have in the sec?? Alabama has been less then spectacular, Georgias biggest game was us, they’re welcome btw, without us georgias sos would be Ohio state level.
What a freaking season though!! Let’s finish these last 3 games and prove to the country we belong in the top 4!!

UT is still in the national spotlight. Got 11:00am CBS game today. Got night game with USC on ESPN at 7pm or 7:30pm, and the Vandy game will most likely be a night game on SEC Network also.

I agree with you entirely that our lads and coaches have been the story of the 2022 season. We weren't so much on the national scene until we beat Pitt. Then folks started noticing us. After we beat Florida, everyone was alert to our presence. Then beating LSU and Bama back-to-back, that made us the central storyline of college football.

So it really hasn't been "all season." Really, the month of October. That was ESPN cashing in on the phenomenon Josh Heupel & Co have created.

And it hasn't lost its cache, not by half even. Sure, losing to Georgia took the Cinderella element away, but we're still a very good team, one to be reckoned with, one of only a handful of teams who can still win the biggest prize of the year. Our brand of football is still exciting, hugely fun to watch.

So the "cast us aside once they've done with us" bit of your spiel, that's the part that is overplayed.

We're still a golden goose for the money-makers, friend. Will be for years and years to come. That's fun to reflect on.

At this point, I think everyone assumes we will win out with our weak schedule and will finish 11-1. If Oregon wins out, 3 of their last 4 games will be against ranked opponents so those are the games to watch until they lose. TCU has a pretty good story to tell so far but they have a very big test (in which they will probably lose) against Texas. I think ESPN still has us with about a 65% chance of being in the playoff.

That's a bad, sour attitude on the situation, imho. "used Tennessee" ? I suppose the AD (program) was/is extremely happy to have had this exposure opportunity.

I don't think that is the case. Tennessee is good but nobody really knew how good. The offense good but the defense suspect. The problem is Pitt, UF, and UA are having down years so nobody knew if those wins were because of how good UT was or just how mediocre those teams are this year. Those wins were not in dominate fashion either. Once they played UGA it kind of answered those questions.

It's just you and a certain faction of paranoid victimee Vols fans who insist on seeing anti-Vol conspiracies at every turn. CFB is a business, always has been, and reinforced now by the NIL. The NCAA, UT and every other big time school, TV and cable stations, aim at the market. If we win out, the UT is back to once again being a sought after marketing tool for associated parties. Even if we don't end up at the NCS, bowl sponsors will be clamoring for us because we're a major draw, and even non-Vols fans like seeing us in bowls. My suggestion. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Somebody will be the #5 and #6 teams in the nation. It might be us. It might not. In 1998 the last two weeks of the season featured a bunch of upsets to leave UT and FSU standing, including (iirc) a couple of undefeated teams losing in big upsets that last two weeks. Wins against Mizzou, SCAR, and even Vandy aren't assured. How will Hooker manage in the rain? We don't really know. Just enjoy the games and the season. I didn't think we would finish Top 10, so this is all gravy for me.

I think this nails it. Our remaining games are seen as a forgone conclusion and not as a story. On the flip side, there are numerous teams around us in the standings with very compelling games left to play. Naturally those games are going to get more attention.

Yes I've been saying we need a lot of help to make the CFP. And we may get the help we need. And the TV talking heads are going to push all the alternate options also because they need to make it as interesting as possible. I don't think there's a grand conspiracy theory to NOT include UT in the CFP but if certain things happen there's a bunch of people here going to have a big case of the orange hiney.

And yes, those that remember 98 like me know that there's no guarantees. Everyone thinks we were a slam dunk to make the first BCS Title game. But there was a tremendous push heading into that last week for UCLA and Kansas State to both leapfrog UT. And it took at least one of them losing to guarantee that. Luckily A&M beat KSU in double OT and UCLA got taken down just barely as well.

Of course they used us. They use everyone. You think sports media cares? They don't. They never did. They never will. It's all a game, to convince you to be a viewer, and to sell your viewership to advertisers. That's it.

They spend money to make themselves look important, convince people that they matter, and then package that trick into something they can market for even more money.
