Have a ‘21 crewmax. Absolutely love it. Have had a 2003 and 2017 as well. Will probably keep this one for a long time.

The 4.7 is a super reliable engine. I drove one in a 4Runner over 300K then passed it along to a family member. It developed an oil leak that was solved with new valve cover gaskets. Still burnt zero oil between changes. Liked it so much I found the same truck a couple years newer with lower mileage.

I think the new government fuel mileage regulations are forcing manufacturers to make drive trains more complex to squeeze a few extra mpgs out. Smaller displacement with turbos, cylinder dropping at cruising speed, thinner castings for weight reduction, etc. it’s making every engine less reliable. IMHO

We have a Honda Odyssey van that my wife drives. Is a 2016 and has what Honda calls VCM(variable cylinder management). Is Honda's version of dropping cylinders at certain times. When the eco light comes on, that is what it is doing. Bought new and did great up until the last year. Is right at 140,000 miles. Started having issues with misfires.

After some research found is a common problem. Bought something called a VCM Tuner 2 and installed. It muzzles the VCM(makes the engine a 6 cylinder all the time).

Have noticed a drop in mileage but has been running much better. So far, so good. Knock on wood. 😆

I bought a SVCM tuner for my 19 Ridgeline that I owned for 2 months. The VCM by Honda is so stupid

Out of warranty is fine to do that. I would not recommend under the factory warranty (or an extended "service contract").

Our van(see post above) is out of warranty.

The misfires we were having were not good. Heard a bunch of horror stories of them causing the active motor mounts to fail due to the vibration. Apparently about a $1500 bill to replace them.

I hope my tuner doesn't cause me issues. Were a ton of folks swearing by it. Jury still out for me.

👍

Do you think it's a bad thing to do?

Have seen lots of people recommend doing it, even if new, and removing if have to take in for warranty service.

Takes maybe 10 minutes to install.

It chokes the engine. Burns more oil over time, cause pistons and valves to wear out faster, wears out the crappy Honda transmission constantly shifting, and causes misfires. I hated the sound that the engine made when it would shut off 1-2 cylinders. It’s all in the name of “emissions and gas mileage”. My truck ran so much smoother without the VCM working.

A Honda engine runs efficiently, better, and will last much longer by disabling the VCM.

You are right. You can take off the SVCM tuner before taking it to a dealer, if you have a warranty issue.

I had my tuner off when I took my 19 Ridgeline to the dealer back in the spring. The transmission was shot and the prior owner only changed the transmission fluid once in 50k mi and likely towed it beyond its limits. I got out of it and went back to Toyota. Hondas cost more in maintenance over time, especially with having to change the transmission fluid often.

I still own and drive a 1995.5 Tacoma, single cab, standard transmission, 4wd with locking hubs and the 2.7 3RZ. The first year they actually called them tacomas. It only has 250k miles and has been a workhorse. She tows very well and would tow a Yammah jetboat like it wasn't even attached. The problem wasn't towing it but stopping the boat and truck.

I never owned a tundra but from my understanding the first couple years of tundras were called T100's and they may have been reliable but kind of dogs.. once they started with the v8 4.7 and 5.7 the power came along.

Yep, for years Toyota made fuel efficient trucks; thinking that's what Truck owners wanted; 20-25 mpg with the 3.0 and the 2.7, but finally realized that American truck owners wanted power and speed, and after introducing the 4.7 in the Tundra, (12-15 mpg) sales took off. So they said give the stupid Americans what they want. Next came the 5.7. More gas guzzling. But they were very reliable; the adage on the 4.7 was "bulletproof" I had one in a 06 Lexus GX470 and it took off like a rocket, 13mpg. But man what an engine otherwise. Probably the best overall V8 ever produced. The new V6 Turbos are costing Toyota a Billion $ to have the dealers replace the Engines; they say it's cheaper than fixing the problems. That's the only black eye on Toyota in the 45 years I've been driving them.

So I posted this yesterday, and today I'm flooded with Tundra and Toyota Pop ups. Think they are spying much?? Geeze.
