Track star Williams turning heads at cornerback

Guy has obviously got a good set of wheels but he's a 400m kind of guy, not a "burner" in the usual sense of the word. Wade for instance is a top 10 UT 60m guy and sub-10.3 100m. Williams is not in that class.

Still, obviously has some speed and looks like he might be an asset at DB.

I thought he was good late in his career here. Seems like I remember him having a pick 6 that was crucial in a big game for us and had some timely plays. All in his final year. And he was 2nd team all sec. He was never Eric berry or anything, but as far as track guys playing dback... I'd certainly take another Jonathan Wade

We could've used him last year for sure

This staff is developing players and will get the most out of their talent. Coaching!

Recruiting is very good. From the outside looking in, development seems to be exceptional. The one remaining piece is getting it done during game week and on game day. I hope we see that this fall.

Can't wait to see this Williams player. Other than being fast as all get out does he have the talent to tackle anyone?

Won't really matter which one it is, we are toast either way with that kind of youth starting on the corner in the SEC. Our safeties better be on point.

In a way I just want Moseley to start but adding Williams and Gaulden along with Sutton really give us a good two deep set of CB. Plus we still have Riyahd, Foreman and others that are servicable.

At Safety, Swafford and TK2 compliment Randolph with McNeil being a back up to safety or NB. Coleman looks at lot more comfortable at NB.

Love the possibilities with this revamped secondary!!!

Brother plays safety for 49ers, so I think he will be more than just a track guy

Football scholly to Maryland, so Hes seen the field a time or two. Looked like he played tough in the scrimmage passing reps. North lit him up on a TD bomb, but I have a feeling that's going to be the legacy of more than a few SEC dbs this year.

Scout.com reported a 4.43 40 time for Williams July 2010.

I like that instead of our recent pro day 4.7+ DBs. That being said, track athletes are trained on the intricacies of shaving 1/100s seconds of times with sprinting techniques. Football is rarely a track style sprint out of the blocks. Williams may look a little better on the stopwatch. Nonetheless, faster is always better.

I'm excited @ some of our DB talent coming up ... Sutton, Foreman, Moseley, Berry, Williams, Gaulden(starting CB by yr end IMO) Kelly, McDowell ... Beasts!

The dual-sport career didn’t happen immediately at UT. Williams focused on track initially, winning several events and placing in others, specializing in the 400m event. He then remembered how important both sports were to him at the 2012 Tennessee-Florida game. Maybe it was the electric atmosphere that day at Neyland Stadium as College Gameday was in town. Perhaps it was seeing Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel slice up Tennessee’s secondary. But something hit Williams that day as he watched from the stands.

“I saw that game and I was like, ‘man I can still play,’” he said. “And sitting back just watching, I didn’t want to be in the stands anymore. I just wanted to be out there running around and making plays.”

Now he has his chance. Williams starting probably isn’t what many Tennessee fans expected, but it might be just what the Vols need as they try to bridge the gap in speed that’s haunted their secondary in recent years.
