Track team receivers

Does anyone remember when Majors and Fulmer needed speed receivers how they would hit the track team and teach them to run routes and catch? It's a random thought, but we had some good receivers come from there.
Yes, the UT Track Coach was Chuck Rohe, & several Vol receivers came from his stable of athletes. Coach Rohe died in 2023 at age 92.

No, it didn't happen that way at all. We signed receivers who also ran track when players competed in both sports. In regards to your first question, the answer is NO. That actually never happened

That's the way I remember it. Grady was the exception, and he wasn't much of a receiver. If we're going to have this discussion, somebody needs to say RichmondFlowers.

Speaking of WRs. Not one receiver had a catch last night for Penn State. Not one.
Now #44 TE was a beast. I really enjoy having TE who have good hands. They can dominate a game. Big part of the NFL passing game.

With that said, PSU had zero stud receivers and an average QB and still came within an interception of reaching the championship game.
You have to be able to scheme and adapt to the personal you have at the time. Due to injuries or incorrect recruiting evaluation of players.

Wasn’t a receiver but Jabari Greer was a great track/football player for the vols. Won a national championship in the indoor 60 hurdles. Think he was the last great track/football player we have had that I can recall. He had a really good nfl career.

Last track speedster/wr that I can recall was Leonard Scott and then Jonathan Wade. Wade quickly got converted to defense after a short time at receiver. There may be some others but have tried to forget the 2010s.

The way the game has shifted to such an offense driven game, if I was coaching or a scout, I would seek receivers and TE's that are very tall. Tall receivers have an advantage because it's less chance of passes being intercepted . Just throw the ball up high and let the defender get called for PI.

I really hoped that Butch could talk Christian Coleman to come to practice but the Olympics were def his goal. Still would have been cool to see him on the field.

Who all signed here as football players, but also ran track. None of them came from the track team

News flash, Chuck Rohe was Doug Dickey’s recruiting coordinator as well as the track coach. Guessing the Bear Bryant rule was in effect and most started on FB schollies, but the implicit DUAL opportunity enticed many to UT.

There was a plan.

Edited to add he did both, but Richmond Flowers had an Olympic goal for sure. Same for Sam Grady and Gault years later.

All of our great WRs who ran track were great hs football players too. Not one single AA receiver we've had came off the track team and developed into a football player as the OP suggested.

They would come here to do both track and football but mainly on the football team
The track team would cover their scholarship so it didn't count against our FB limit. This is not allowed anymore

Quantify that ALL. AA or not we had impactive players where their selection of UT was influenced by being allowed to run track, several have been listed. Powell’s one year run at TB was significant and my aging memory has him being a find AFTER he came from WM & Mary I think it was, to run track.

Guessing several lessor knowns flipped to track scholly when football did not work out back in the bigger scholly number days.
