Trae Golden most improved vol....ever?

If Golden continues to play well, his turn around will resemble that of Dan Bradshaw under a new coach. My dad and I would cuss Buzz Peterson for putting him in the game. He was god awful. He later became my favorite player to ever wear the orange. Dane stole the ball. Remember it like it was yesterday...to beat Florida.

His first year he was atrocious. What I will give you is not much was expected from Smith as he started as a walk on. I was just throwing out names for sake of coversation. Trae definitely has potential. There aren't too many Mr Georgia high school basketball players at the level he played that flop in college. I even think we saw Trae was taking a step late last season. I felt he was the lone bright spot against Michigan in the tourney.

and Smith still had a better FG% than Trae did in his first year

I think part of it can also be attributed to the fact that he is playing out of position and it probably took him a year to adjust to playing PG. Prior to last year, Golden was a natural SG and excelled at attacking the basket and scoring the basketball. Being forced into PG duty out of necessity obviously took him some time. It seemed as though he was so focused on running the team and getting others involved that he neglected the things that made him a successful scorer in high school.

He certainly improved under Pearl. Didn't Pearl play to his strengths more? I can't remember well but I think Buzz had Bradshaw strictly at guard and Pearl played him at 3 and 4 and where his style fit better. I may be way off, not positive.

Trae was a combo guard coming out of HS, he was, IIRC rated #6 OA in his class at one point during his Jr season of HS. Most of Trae's flashes last season were brilliant passes. To say that he was a "natural SG" is, IMO, selling him a tad short. Trae changed his body as much as he changed his game. I am extremely impressed with how much work he had to have put in over the off season in the weight room and on the court.

And hot damn it felt good to see some pick n roll offense, some back cuts, and some hi-lo action. I didn't hear "CUTTERS!!!" all game and that felt good too. Bruce recruited some players that didn't fit his style at all, but thus far it sure looks like CCM knows how to play to their strengths!

It was Haislip's 3rd year before he raised his game. Luckily Trae is making his move in year two.

golden has definitely had an impressive improvement this year but in all honesty i think the most improved player of all time at tennessee is swiper boy lol in all honesty he almost looks like a basketball player now. i have been pleasantly surprised with his play this year! last year i didnt think he was good enough to be water boy but he has turned in to a decent defender this year.

If memory serves, Tracy Webster was a very good Big 10 point guard

Yes he was. Kent Williams was a good combination guard too. Martin was a SF by position, but in a three guard system. Webster and Williams are more responsible than Martin for Trae's improvement I'd say. That, and an offseason to become more adapted to playing the position.

He showed flashes last year, but just never seemed chosen for the role by CBP. I expected him to be our best player this year. Sure looks like it so far.

Agreed. He was one of Pearl's doghouse guys. ("It's looking bad...take out Golden...")

Here's my post from May:

ME: You're not the only one who thinks he's shown plenty of potential (but we are a scant few). I've shown several times how his +/- and a/to ratio were significantly better than Goins, all while playing with the non-scoring unit which usually included Pearl and McBee and only rarely included either Hopson or Harris. Ken Pomeroy (a sabermetrician of sorts at kenpom.com) has a stat called Assist Rate. It's a little inexact, but he basically takes all the goals scored by a team, calculates the potential assists a guy could have based on the percentage of time on the court, then sees how many assists he actually had. So, if a team had 36 goals per game, a player who played 50% of the time could have 18 assists. 6 assists would give him an assist rate of 33.3. The leader in the SEC was Dee Bost of Mississippi State at 38.8; second was Chris Bass of LSU at 30.2. Golden didn't have enough minutes to qualify, but his rate was 30.8 (and, incidentally, Goins was at 19.9).
He controlled the floor, pushed the ball, and distributed MUCH better than Goins. His head up defense wasn't as aggressive as Goins, but his help defense was much better. His shooting will come around with the new regime...
