Transfer Portal 21-22

I watched parts of the Jordan Brand classic.. the player heading to LSU performances in these all-star games won’t translate to college basketball.
As for Justine Pissott she’s a triple threat. She’s a better passer and ball handler than I previously noticed. Shooting form & efficiency is ELITE. The first 3 pt shot she made in this game was a thing of beauty!
To me she’s projected as a 2/3 on the college level. Rebounds well and has good defensive instincts.
Areas for improvement are improving aggressiveness to drive the ball, footwork defensively, and strength to play inside the paint.

This is the one i was saying I suspected was going to transfer and had heard this name for weeks even before the championship game or final four.

@tchristensen22 and @Lucy this is the one who i was talking about. @Lucy is there interest? I guess we will find out in the coming weeks 👀 because i'm sure she will have her bevy of suitors.

It’s easy to say you’re ok sitting behind better players and learning until you have to do it. Rumors about her transferring have been around since Christmas so I don’t think SC fans were really surprised, although most of us hoped she would change her mind. She dealt with several injuries and Covid right at the start of the season and by the time she got fully healthy Breezy Hall had taken the majority of extra guard minutes and was very good. Although her offense needs a lot of work, her defense was outstanding and she helped her team win a NC. She certainly enjoyed herself during the celebration. :)

She is a big, quick guard like Jordan, although she literally can’t hit the broad side of the backboard with her shot. :). NC State is the early front runner but you never know. It was close between us and them when she committed. NC State also just lost 4 starters so there will be plenty of PT. I know her parents love Dawn but want her to be happy so they’ll support her wherever she goes. I’m really not sure what she’s looking for. She said her vision and the vision Dawn had for her are 2 different things so who knows.

According to Hoopgurlz", "Ultra-athletic guard with superior size in the back court impacts the game on both ends of the floor; manufactures shots, explodes off the dribble and finishes plays in traffic; rises on jumper in mid-range game and delivers; anticipates defensively and creates havoc in passing lanes, scores off of turnovers; an impact guard in the class of 2021. (Olson)". Yep, I take her. She is much closer to Horston but historically a better shooter than she is to Wynn. Even Jordy would have struggled refining her game with the Gamecocks!

Yeah, if she wants to be here then we gotta take her, if not for this coming season then for the future.

To your point about trying to improve while sitting on the SC bench, It was said here she shot 1 for 33 from 3 last season. But that is so bad that it can't be real - ie, anyone can shoot better than 1 for 33, so if an elite player shoots that, we know she has something going on in the head. one thing the 1 for 33 shows me: She needs a new coach.

Someone asked about SR’s high school stats, and she has also been compared to Wynn, so here are their high school and first year college stat comparisons. (SR’s high school stats are not complete.) Do not know the high school competition level for either player, but SR won many awards and was more highly ranked at #3 (#2 guard) for the 2021 class. KW was a track star and graduated with a 4.0 gpa. SR is 6’1, KW is 6’0.

Per game average in Senior year of high school:
SR:
36.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 5.3 steals

KW:
29 points, 10.8 rebounds, 5.4 steals, 3.6 assists, 1.2 blocks, 54% field goal percentage, and 73% free throw percentage

In college, SR played in 27 games, with 348 minutes, or 12.9 min/game.
KW played in 30 games, with 246 minutes, or 8.2 min/game.
Both shot poorly, and both averaged 2.3 points/game. (SR had worse field goal percentage, but a better free throw percentage).

SR made 98 shot attempts (30 3 pointers, with 1 made) and made 24, missing a total of 74, for a .245 field goal percentage. She made 12/24 free throws for .500 percentage. She averaged 1.6 rebounds per game. Playing 102 more minutes than Wynn (you can do math for percentage comparison), SR had 37 fouls, 38 assists, 27 turnovers, 13 steals, and 13 blocks.

KW made 25/65 field goals (made 1 of 8 3 pointers), for .385%. She made 19/44 free throws for .432%. She averaged 2 rebounds per game. In 102 minutes less than SR, she had 22 fouls, 19 assists, 27 turnovers, 11 steals, and 0 blocks.

I have not seen SR play, so cannot comment on how her shot looks, or how she played defense, but it looks like she shot a lot. She could be like Rae, whose shot always looked good, but didn’t fall in her Freshman year, but eventually got a lot better. I like that SR had assists and blocks. I saw all of KW’s play this year. Her shot did not look good. In the beginning, she sometimes chased the ball on defense, rather than stay with the player. She can learn better defense and decision making. Both players are described as athletic, both should get a lot better from Freshman to Sophomore play, both have potential.

I hope SR does come to Tennessee, and becomes the player her high school numbers predicted she could be.

GO LADY VOLS!!!
I would simply add that Kaiya's FG% (38.5) was higher than Rae's (31.7) as freshmen. And I still say that the apt comparison for Kaiya is Rae. Kaiya, in my view, will be a superstar for the LVs. With that said, I believe that both Kaiya and Saniya (if she commits to TN) would be potent weapons for the LVs, starting in 2023 and beyond. GBO.

Is NC St the early leader 😉

"Rivers was eighth on the team in minutes this year, but struggled mightily on offense. She shot only 24.5 percent from the field overall, and 1-for-31 from 3-point range. Despite those numbers, she was used frequently by Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley for her defense and passing ability, including 20 minutes in the Final Four against Louisville."

Think we all could feel this with dawn now grant it i think she is excellent and to be honest what she has done in building a no name university in womens basketball into a powerhouse is commendable, but i think someone said earlier in the chat shes basically playing devils advocate of keeping talent stock, over recruiting keeping talent away from other teams case in point its no reason for them to technically be pursuing asia blackwell like why it makes no sense but the point is i can see some false recruitment of players not being honest with them. and being the hot commodity they are right now alot of kids will buy it
I didn’t get “she’s not honest with her recruits” out of Rivers statement. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Anyone going into South Carolina should already know the talent is stacked and you’d have to earn everything.

That could be said for any coach. You always want to recruit talent equal to or better than you have already. I don’t blame Dawn for this, players have to understand the days of coming in and being a superstar freshman on a team that wins it all is great and far between. And that’s ok if the fit isn’t right because of your personal goals
I don’t blame her either. How do players get better if they don’t have to truly compete for minutes?

I think you misread her post this person is actually supporting the LV
Not only that, even Pat was beatable. At some point it has to be okay to give Dawn her credit. You may not like her methods, her style, or personal stance on her beliefs but she’s doing a great job. And probably will continue, Tennessee just has to get back to that elite level and see where the cards fall. I’m which I have no doubt Kellie and staff will get the program back there!

Just trying to understand how y’all are coming up with this based on Rivers’ statement?

I know, for real. There’s no animosity in Columbia between Dawn and Saniya or any of the other players. Our team walked around the field tonight at the spring game to a standing ovation and to watch her react with her coaches and teammates you would never know she was transferring. It was a business decision. She just didn’t like where she fit in our vision for our team. We play thru the post. Maybe she wants to go to a place where they play 5 out. I really think it’s something simple like that.

How is everybody so sure Dawn is recruiting Blackwell or Reese? They had a recruit at dinner last night but IDK who it was. Maybe it was Barker. That would make more sense than Reese.

I want Reese in Orange 🍊

Yup... this summer will be super important for her and BK. Well all of them but we see what a summer of improvement could do for them and the team. Sara just seems like as long as she keeps working the game is going to slow down and she will be good. Karo the same. she showed out and i think she is going to take their year and use it.
I love Karo! Hopefully she works on her speed and agility this summer. She’s so fundamentally sound, she’s going to be a joy to watch next season.

With Rivers, it has nothing to do with earning. It has to do with Dawn not wanting or knowing how to coach her talent.

I have no trouble giving Dawn the credit she deserves. I do think her overblown ego is unattractive and won’t win championships forever.

the LVs need shooters and scorers now, not potential maybe scorers sometime in the future -- just my humble opinion

That’s the chance you take with any recruit though. Even the ones that come in more ready and capable of contributing right away need development.
