Truce....

One thing that nudges me a little "positive" on the hire is offensive personnel. I'm out of work sick and had a chance to watch Heupel's O and Hooker's highlights. They look tailor made for each other. The WR class from last year and other skill players should be excited to play in this O.

As simple as it sounds, it seems he just tries to find ways to get playmakers the ball in space.

First job is figuring out how to keep players in the fold... but the way his O works that's much more critical on D. UT has plenty of potential playmakers on O. We may still lose but it should be a lot more fun to watch if they're scoring points in bunches.

Defense does matter, even though offense is king. Ex. Bama vs Ohio State. Not that Bama's defense was great this past year but they were good enough to limit Ohio State to 341 total yards and 24 pts. Heupel's defense is not good - only 1 out of 3 years in top 50 defenses.

Ok...I've said my piece, and had my fun. Josh Heupel was not who I wanted, and I still believe we left opportunities on the table. That being said, we could have...and have (recently) done much worse. All joking, griping and Nega-Vol'ing aside, I truly hope Coach Heupel exceeds my reasonably lowered expectations by a country mile. And he very well may.

I have long stated reasonable and achievable goals for this program. I do not suggest we are anywhere near being in the playoff picture, nor should we expect we deserve a coach that will in the short-term take us there. However, a new coach can get me fully in his corner with just a few simple achievements.

1. Improve- Develop players. Creatively Scheme. Do more with less (this may be important around here for a while)
2. Beat who you are supposed to.
3. Compete with our Big-3 rivals. Avoid the blowouts. Come home with your shield, or on it. Be prepared, avoid embarrassment, play like a champion, and I will support you.
4. Continue to revisit point number 1.

As long as we are wandering in the wilderness of NCAA sanctions, that is all I ask. Use this time to establish your system, recruit to it, and prepare for the day the sanctions are lifted...because that is when the clock really starts.

I remember Josh Heupel and the 2000 season well. He has been around programs that win at a high level. I hope it translates here. Keep it respectable and I, along with many others with get on board.

Go Vols.
Man I’ve been negative as hell this week. Probably venting a lot of frustration of what has become of the program over the last decade or so more than anything. I’m very skeptical but hoping I’m wrong. Will be glad to eat multiple plates of crow. I just want to see progress and improvement. Be it over 1 year or 3 or 4. I wish coach Heupel and the future staff good luck because they are really gonna need it.

So you think we have recruit SEC caliber athletes at every position during the last 15 years. I think we will recruit better in the next three years and develop them better than we have in the many years.
I can't see how we'll recruit better with likely scholarship and other recruiting dings from the NCAA AND a HC who has limited recruiting experience in the SEC and no SEC HC experience.

His choice of staff is going to be crucial to how quickly we can recover from this mess.

You’re really not very good at this. Take a look at the very last sentence of your previous post to me.

Better yet, don’t...just go to bed.
I can’t believe I am doing this. It’s like having a battle of wits with a monkey. You said at the Initial post you believed some good coaches were left on the table. I’m still asking what is your information. Since you have failed to provide any, its obviously your ASSumption! Dang son, read your own thread!

I agree. That's why I've said that his DC hire will be huge. I think it helps that he came cheap. They won't have to spend a lot on an OC since he will be heavily involved. They should be able to go out and pay top dollar for a DC.

I’m not assuming. I just don’t intend to engage you further about it. It’s been commonly reported in the media that at least two other experienced P5 coaches who everyone is familiar with signaled interest. They weren’t interviewed, or even considered.

Why are you insisting on jacking my thread about Heupel for this argument? You bored?

There were no mattress burnings or marches at Gate 21. That sounds like about as close to a truce as we’re going to get.

I’m looking forward to those reports, that are not from Tony Basilio, that Lane Kiffin was interested in the job. I’ll be waiting. By the way I’m not bored it’s just fun when someone can’t put their money where their mouth is. So let me see those sources.

Just caught up on the thread from earlier. I don't think some people understand the meaning or concept of the word 'truce'

The program is in shambles and the reality is many would not come here at this point. I think we left some things on the table, but at this point we must move on. It really comes down to two choices: support the team or keep your money in your pocket. Who he surrounds himself with as coordinators will say alot about the program moving forward.

It's ok...I have a new method of dealing with trolls that works every time. They just disappear.

Oh...I'll probably keep my money in my pocket, until I see enough reason not to. My post really was about the noise, and giving him time to make it. Upon reflection we could have done much worse...there are things in this hire to be encouraged about, especially heading into to the NCAA darkness we are likely about to encounter.

I don't viscerally dislike Heupel the way I did Pruitt, Jones, and Dooley from the first mention of them associated with this job. I can give him space, and support if he can give me an exciting, productive, and developed program. I'm at least more than apathetic after this hire, and maybe even cautiously optimistic. The names left on the table are not his fault.

He seems like a nice guy so far.
He is a far cry from his predecessor....who to me was wholly and totally unlikeable.

A good offense gives us a chance to be exciting. I can get behind that for a change. As bad as their record ended up being I found myself jealous of how fun Ole Miss was to watch this year. With the NCAA coming to town, fun may be the only positive thing we have going for us.
