That starts with convincing people some jobs just don't need a college degree.
Yeah, there is a negative stigma attached to vocational programs. Silly when you think about it, as those are the jobs that are in high demand basically everywhere in North America.
I'm a Millennial, and it was beaten into my brain since elementary school that a four year degree was the absolute measure for "success." Other options were sort of brushed aside by basically all of my teachers through high school. That needs to change.
I agree to an extent. I think the college education American youth are receiving these days aren't preparing them for work in the "real" world. Too many degrees are being wasted in fields that jobs just aren't that available for. Additionally, tech and vocational school enrollment should be up for the jobs of need, but don't require a college degree.
You are correct, we should be creating jobs, but those entering in the work force should be getting educated for the jobs being created.

Agree. There's been a big push over the last 20 years to put more kids into college, even though that's not the exclusive need. Many good-paying jobs are available and needed for folks with the right technical and vocational skills. Too many folks who go to college end up not finishing, and a partial degree in something isn't as marketable as a completed program from a vocation/technical school.
Indeed. There are also some careers that you need a degree to even be considered. Any degree. Doesnt matter if its related or not. Its silly.
There are actually a lot of immigrants in the tech industry, but they aren't illegals. They're the type of skilled workers Trump would actually want in the country.
That said, companies that are ramping up hiring are generally finding it difficult to locate qualified employees. Just creating jobs accomplishes nothing, if there aren't workers to fill those jobs.
The fact is that we do need immigrants for work in this country, to a degree.
get rid of welfare, make people work for a living. you will find plenty of bodies that way.
For my generation, tech school was what was suggested if you couldn't get into university. From the moment my teachers brought it up it was cast in a negative light. Hear that for enough years and it affects your thinking as a teenager.
Our high school had a vocational wing for auto body, shop, electronics, etc. We had a technical track as well as college prep and honors. But this idea that every snowflake must shoot for the stars and go to college meant settling for anything less was demeaning and offensive. But we cant all be cardiologists. And someone in a skilled trade can be making a pile of money by the time his classmates leave a four year college. The wages for skilled labor are only going to go up. Hell they have apps to find people to hang pictures and fix a leaky faucet. More and more people have no idea how to fix stuff, let alone lay brick or run electrical. When the boomers retire off I have no idea who will be doing this work.

We had similar "tracks" in high school. No one ever said explicitly "if you don't go to university you will be a failure," but they sure as hell implied it in counseling.
