I would hardly call it "picking it up," but I believe Politico wrote an article about a worker in the US embassy to Ukraine doing opposition research on Manafort.

Somehow, this has spun into collusion with the Ukrainian government by Hillary and the DNC, "So what's the big deal about Donny and the Kremlin?" sort of thing.

At least that's how I currently understand it.
