Negavols are a relatively small, but active, portion of the VN base.
The surefire way to spot a negavol is when they call someone a "sunshine pumper" or "sunshine sheep". They hate optimism.
Negavols are like beggarlice, they serve no useful purpose whatsoever.

I've read a lot of articles and comments here over the past year about this team starting to "turn the corner", and get back to what Tennessee football should be. I'd like to see our fan base start turning that corner a lot more. I understand how frustrating it has been, but to say "I'm a Vols fan", and bash the players the way some do isn't right. I've seen countless times about how players and recruits read volnation, and I'd just like them to see a fan base that supports them. Call me a sunshine pumper, or whatever, I just believe its easier for a kid to give his all for Tennessee when he knows Tennessee has his back.
Every SEC team and all the big programs have fan bases and message boards just like this one. It's big time football and most players understand that if they aren't performing to expectations there will be complaints. On the other hand, if you're a great player you will have streets/babies/etc named after you. That's never going to change as long as the fans actually care.
There has never been more message board negativity around the program than in the last few years and yet Butch signed a top 5 class last year.........how did that happen?
Bull crap. This is the most positive this message board has been in years. It was certainly worse when Fulmer left, and much worse when Kiffin left, and also worse the whole time Dooley was here!
Not to mention the following might have been a factor as well...
- a large number of legacy recruits
- a large amount of in state talent
- some of the best facilities available
- playing in one of the best stadiums and overall environments in CFB
- playing in the SEC - the best conference in CFB
- recognizing a great opportunity to play early
- recognizing a team that is on the upswing
... and these are just a few that come to mind.
If this is the most positive VN has been in years then why are we even having this conversation? If what you say is true, then your complaints about negativity is invalid.
Partly because you completely quoted me out of context and tried to suggest that I stated our players weren't mentally tough. And also partly because you asked me how it was that Butch was able to recruit a top 5 class... so I answered your question.
Lastly, I haven't "complained" about negativity. I gave some very specific examples to support the OP. If you would like to disagree with those examples then I'd be interested in hearing your perspective. However, you seem more content, for whatever reason, to want to take things out of context.
Question for you... as an athlete or an athletic supporter (pun intended), would you prefer to have fans that disparage athletes while they are struggling and only support them when they are playing well; or to have fans that are either supportive (or even just quiet) while an athlete is struggling and also supportive when they are playing well? It's a simple question.
I am a supporter of honest debate and opinions, no matter what they be, and I have defended many a player and coach when countless posters were criticizing them. Some people just can't tolerate the truth so they either have 50+ posters on ignore or make up ridiculous notions that message board negativity hurts the program in an effort to shut down honest debate.
Saying a player sucks when they are in fact playing poorly isn't really much of a debate. I think everyone would agree that JSmith had issues with drops last year. The discussion and point of this thread, however... as I understand it, is why do some fans seemingly "feel the need" to disparage the athletes when they have a bad game.
And btw... thanks for that exceptionally diplomatic, and purely vanilla response to my very simple question. I'm not sure why you chose to completely dodge the question.
For the record, I think it's quite ironic that you jumped on this thread to complain about disparaging posts made about players, and then proceeded to engage in name calling in your dialogue with me.
For the record...
- I didn't complain about anything... I made a post with specific examples relative to the OP's thread (once again... you just seem to make things up).
- Why do you continue to refuse to answer a simple question?
Oh yeah... and please reference the post where I called you a name. It really does seem to be a bad habit you have of just making things up.
