One of the most promising UT basketball players in some time, could have left for NBA last year,should have. His fate and reputation as a UT premier basketball athlete may come down to one act of being irresponsible.The weed,the alcohol are bad enough but the gun is off the wall thinking. If that's the case, I still wish him well and do feel somewhat bad for him having lost a parent not too long ago, having lost both of mine.

I agree, I thought he would be great.. I'm really going to miss having him on the team.. Hate the way it is going to end,,

I'm glad someone finally started a thread on this - I've been unable to piece any of this stuff together thus far, as its all so confusing to keep straight.

It's Tyler Smith, it was a Smith & Wesson, and Brian Williams....it gets jumbled, at least to me.

I also appreciate the personal empathy which you expressed - it keeps the humanity of it all in focus. I've never thought about how this one mistake may prove very, very costly to him, but after reflecting on your comments, I totally see it now.

Great thread, insightful comments - look forward to hearing others chime in here, as I think that this story has legs.

Tyler had the talent, just missed out on the smarts. The weed has had him in a funk this entire season. Just gotta hope he doesn't fall off the planet.

Won't miss him a bit. Haven't liked him for two years. He didn't cost himself nba money; he wasn't getting drafted. Lots of people lose parents. Do they turn to thug life?

I along with everyone else on here have know idea of what is going to happen. I am going to let it run its course and not make any judgements one way or the other. There are times when things happen and they just snowball. The guns are the thing that makes it bad. I hope the best for all concerned especially to the guys that are left on the team and hope things work out for the better for the other four. GO VOLS Great game last night.

Agreed on the NBA. Why do people keep saying he was/is going to the NBA? The NBA doesn't seem to want him.

The 2010 mock draft on nbadraft.net had him early in the 2nd round(early 30's) a few days ago and now he has dropped to #49

This is probably going to get me yelled at, but Tyler Smith is over rated by UT fans in my opinion. Yes, he is a pretty good basketball player. But I would of rather had Lofton or Smith over him any day, even Hopson.

Just sad to see people throw away a dream by running around with hand guns... The only thing I have against the marijuana part is it's illegal, I'd rather see them toke then drink.

Smith is a good complimentary player. To focus an offense around him is a mistake as he will generally force way to many shots. He had a history of hitting "ugly" shots while at UT. Starting last year, those ugly shots did not fall as much with him being the focal point. I generally liked watching him play and hate this turn of events but those are his mistakes. The game of basketball is an opportunity for those that want to make the best of it. Not for those that feel they can get by with anything because of it.

So does anyone have any idea when an official announcement is going to be made? It sounds like the writing is on the wall, if all the reports I'm reading are true (Smith's image being removed everywhere, "insider" information, etc.), but personally I'd still like to wait for an official announcement.

He was a great compliment to Lofton the year we got robbed vs. OSU in the Sweet 16. Other than that, he's been decent.

When I first heard this had happened, I was a little taken back. Tyler Smith was my favorite player in the league, he always seemed to be a class act. I wish he would of come out firing on all cylinders this year as he had done in the past, it just always seemed like his heart was not in it this year, but he was still my guy. Now looking at the circumstances he got himself into I have to reevaluate who my favorite player is.

I wish he would of used is head a little bit better than he had, but sometimes the reality is not always what you have dreamed up in your head of your favorite player. I hope the best for him and I hope he can still finish out his education but he has no reason to be apart of this team.

One more thing, I don't think these four guys were doing anything that a few players around the nation probably dabble in, they just got caught. But when you get caught you have to deal with consequences and come back down to earth.

As for Tyler, its sad to see whats happened. Its sad to see it happen to any youth like that. But whether he went to the NBA last year, or if he goes this year, he probably still ends up playing ball in Europe. Don't see the NBA game in him.
