U.S. boosts deportation of illegals - - The Washington Times, America's Newspaper

The Department of Homeland Security, continuing to enforce what it calls a "strict policy of arresting, prosecuting and jailing" illegal immigrants, deported a record number of those caught on the nation's borders last year — more than 280,000 in fiscal year 2007 compared with 186,000 a year earlier.

It was the largest number of illegals ever removed from the country in a single year.

The increase is attributable to what veteran law-enforcement authorities said is a revised apprehension process, adding that the department no longer is targeting only criminal illegals for removal, but seeks eventually to apprehend, charge and deport all those who cross illegally into the United States.

To that end, Homeland Security has initiated "Operation Streamline" along some sectors of the U.S.-Mexico border, which brings illegal immigrants into the U.S. criminal justice system, where they are prosecuted either for a misdemeanor on their first offense or a felony if they have been caught before.

"Under this program, individuals who are caught at certain designated high-traffic, high-risk zones are prosecuted and, if convicted, are jailed," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said at a recent press briefing.

Mr. Chertoff noted that between October and December, the Justice Department prosecuted 1,200 cases under the new program and, as a consequence, apprehension rates dropped nearly 70 percent in those areas.

"When people who cross the border illegally are brought to face the reality that they are committing a crime, even if it is just a misdemeanor, that has a huge impact on their willingness to try again and on the willingness of others to break the law coming across the border," he said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokeswoman Ernestine Fobbs said the agency's Office of Detention and Removal Operations deported to 195 countries a total of 280,523 illegal immigrants during fiscal 2007 — which ended Sept. 30.

Apparently an illegal running from a fender bender here in Atlanta went the wrong way on an I75 ramp and hit a car full of family coming from a band recital. Father and son along with the wrong way driver died. Really Sad

Damn those illegals are terrible. Lets exterminate them. No , American citizen has ever done such terrible things:ermm: Oh wait, we have perhaps one of the highest crime rates in the world. It must be those illegal immigrants. :clapping:

Your exactly right we have enough trouble from our own citizens. We need to quit importing trouble from Mexico.

You need to remember most of these so called "criminals" are desperate people willing to risk their lives crossing the border to help their dirt poor family. They look to America as the land of opportunity. Most are not trying to hurt anyone, they just want to help their families living on probably less than a dollar a day in their home countries. Going through the legal system could take years, if not decades. I cannot blame them. You would probably do the same for your loved ones...one would think.

Never said they were terrible, but this is the 3rd story I have seen like this in the past month. Its also being reported that alcohol was involved. Maybe he wouldnt be so desperate to run if he was here legally. You know a drivers license maybe some insurance? It is unfair to ask the majority of the population to follow strict rules, then give a wink-wink and a free pass to others. That is Chaos.

Also how would you feel if you woke up in a hospital bed to find out that your family was wiped out because of someone who isnt even supposed to be there. What if a killer excaped from jail and killed your family, wouldnt you be asking "how did he escape, whos fault is this, and what is he doing on our streets?"

Maybe if they respected our country instead of treating it like an ATM they would come here to establish a family and obey the laws. Its kind of tough to respect something when the first thing you do is break one of its most important laws.

It's about time the government actually did something it is supposed to do.
The government in a free, representative republic, with an economy based upon free-market capitalism is supposed to deport people simply for wanting to work within its realm??? Interesting.

I would feel the same if they were wiped out by a nun on her way to church. Dead is dead. However, my original point was, that crime and illegal immigrants are no more linked then any other group in America. MOST(That means something less than 100%) of them are just trying to support their loved ones the best they know how. If you ever lived in a third world country, you would know that it is impossible for these people to change their financial situation in their home country. They are not trying to break a law, they are trying to help their family survive. Again, I said MOST.

The reason many of them want to come to this country is because of opportunity. I don't think it is by chance that it is the darker skinned Mexicans who are of indian descent are the ones who come here. It all boils down to race in Mexico. If you are not lighter skinned and of Spanish descent the odds are you will not hold major office or pull down a good living wage. Until Mexico does something about that from within it will remain the same and we will get their castoffs. Mexico is a large country with many resources, of which they do not make good use of.

Doesn't the government also have the duty of enforcing the laws of the land? The same laws these people are breaking when entering into our country illegally!

...and receive free health care, education for their children and other government services from OUR tax dollars. You bleeding-heart liberals make me sick.

Really? Then why are they sneaking over the border on foot at night? If they didn't know that they were breaking the law, why not just drive through the border checkpoints like everybody else?

If you & your family were in the same desperate situation, I am sure you would risk it also...at least I would hope so. It might be against the U.S. law, but it is not against their religion. In other words, I do not think they think there is anything morally wrong with trying to obtain a better life for their family, despite the chances of being incarcerated for their efforts. In anycase, I would not think twice about breaking "The Law," if it gave my family a chance to survive,,,but hey, that is just me. To each his own....

Yup, our society is in the tank already, so let's continue this trend by allowing people who have no respect for our laws face no consequences.

Its interesting seeing the differing viewpoints on the illegal immigrants from those in western border states to those in and around Tenn.

Actually I never said they should face NO consequences. I just said I can hardly blame them for trying to better their lives. The fact that our society is in the "tank" has nothing to do with illegal immigrants. I think it is revolves more around us always wanting material things now...charge now pay later.
