UConn Booster wants donation back

That's the part that makes no sense. Yes, the donor come off like a 3 year old that didn't get the right flavor ice cream, but coddling donors is like dealing with women . . . you have to pick your battles. As much as I think Addazio would have been a stretch, I don't get going to the mat over a guy like Pasqualoni.

 Why not let the donor get his two cents in if your just going to hire a coach nobody else wants.

Money talks. Should let the big donor have influence on hirings and activities within the athletic department. Worked out really well for SMU back in the 80's! hehe

I know how things work. I know UT has boosters that have a LOT of influence as well. However, this guy at UConn seems like one that when given an inch would take ten miles. Personal agenda as well, perphaps.

JMO, but it seemed to me from the wording of the quotes that he felt "shut out of discussions about the selection of a new football coach" and basically only wanted to be in the loop, not the actual decision on hiring...Just my take, but if I were involved with the program it would seem to be wise to at least allow your major donor to feel like he is privy to the process..Kinda like a lap dance, you pay for the view....You should get to see it all and whatever else happens is a bonus...lol

I agree, and it sounds like the guy could have really helped as well.

After hearing the details hat stated, I feel like the donor had a right to be pissed-- which wasn't my knee-jerk reaction to the story.

"I am sure you can take a collection from your hiring committee and friends to offset the loss of future donations from the Burton family." Bang.

For the life of me, I can't fathom why you'd intentionally shut out your financial lifeline from the hiring process? Especially considering he only wished to be in the loop.

It seems to me like Burton is a pretty intimidating guy, and there's no doubt he wanted veto power. But it also seems like instead of even attempting to work with his top donor, Hathaway was a complete vag and turned away from an ostensibly tough situation. I have no doubt that if he included Burton in the process there would've been no issue.

Bam.

At least give the guy a shot to get his word in. He's your BIGGEST DONOR. Morons.

Even if you weren't going to take his input seriously, at least create the perception that he was involved.

Very dumb by Uconn.

He is going to provide the money he gets back from U Conn to another School,,, I think Hamilton is warming up the plane now...

Also, he Cc'd the Governor of Connecticut and somehow I think the Governor is going to read it. I imagine Burton and the Governor are big buddies.

Adios AD, way to step on yourself.

Handling boosters' egos is a required skill of a college AD. You have to figure out a way to keep them happy and their wallets open while still steering the ship in the direction you want to go. If you can't do that, you need to be in another line of work.

Nobody's a bigger critic of Mike Hamilton than I am, but imagine the minefield he had to tiptoe through to get Fulmer fired. And UConn's AD can't even handle one guy. I'd fire him today if I were their president.

Sounds like he was told that he would be in the loop or whatever he wanted to hear when he gave all that money. But once UCONN got the money in hand it was a different story.

I understand Burton's position, but he is acting very childish about the situation. This could be, and should be, resolved behind closed doors. Sounds like a class A jerk to me.

You settle stuff behind closed doors when you're still trying to get a deal done. Burton doesn't want to deal with the AD anymore; he wants him fired. So he throws open the doors and windows, because he wants everybody at UConn to know that the AD is the one who ran off their biggest booster.

Sometimes the best way to get what you want is to make yourself irrational. Game theory 101.
