UConn discussion (merged)

Had Pat not suffered her affliction, UT would still be right there in the thick of everything -- and probably would have gotten some different recruiting outcomes. It affected the end trajectory of her career and reshaped the nature of Lady Vol basketball since her retirement. That's just the nature of losing an icon, regrettably. There was never going to be a replacement for her. But it'll come around for that bunch too, rest assured. It'll come around for them in the end and it'll be just as rough. (But not so long as they have their coach and ESPN on their doorstep).

There has been nothing lucky about UConn's dominance. Geno is a great coach--better than PS (and I have huge regard for PS). We should have a formidable team next year, and on paper could challenge UConn. But we'll need to get great coaching and learn again how to play well under pressure and stop folding.

Come on people. The Lady Vols don't even look the same as UConn. UConn is as ruthless and as amoral as a CIA assassin. Plus, they play with a collective mindset that would make the Borg proud.

This idea that we are close to being competitive with that team is ludicrous.

Agree, wishing on a star is great but that only works in Disney movies. We have the stars, on paper, but right now that is all it is. It is going to take good playing and good coaching strategies on both sides of the ball. The biggest question is can the coaching staff produce a team that competes on an elite level day in and day out? It is going to take an elite team coached by an elite coach to dethrone the UCONN Empire. Until then, everyone else is playing for second place.

How do you know that? Pats career was tragically cut short. We never know when it will happen to anyone including Geno. If not for the her illness she had more NC in her. Plus she did it with CLASS. Why do you waste your time on here. Go to the boneyard.

Do we REALLY need another thread on here about UCONN?? The whole world knows they are the measuring stick of WCBB right now. Hopefully next year we can close the gap some. Go LVs!!

The 3 teams that I can not stand is Florida, New England Patriots and last but not least is women's UCONN basketball.

Only way we challenge UCONN is to get some pure shooters. Not scorers. UCONN has had some of the purest shooters I've ever seen recently.

I respect Geno on his ability to win the way he has. The only thing I don't like is the cockiness(which I guess u can be if you win like that). I also think if Pat wasn't sick she would have a lot more championships in her.

That's up for discussion. I think if you can pinpoint her illness back to 2003-2006 you may have a point because whether it was her illness or Geno's coaching ability the early 2000's brought the changing of the guard. It has taken once in a lifetime players (i.e. Candace Parker, Britney Griner) to really breakup the UConn domination since then.

He's also a perfect 10-0 in Championship games.

Counting the two AIAW runner-ups, Pat was 8-7 in championship games. There is no doubting her impact on women's basketball in growing the game, the fan base, the TV rights, etc., but Geno seems to get the very best from his teams at the right time. I agree that a downturn will come at some point for UConn as it does for all schools.

I wanted to watch Pat coach for many more years and I think she would have found a way to get the Lady Vols back into Championship contention. One season I wish we could do over was 2008-2009, which was the only non-Sweet 16 appearance for TN. Having the Lady Vols reach the Sweet 16 for every tournament was an awesome record.

The thing about Pat and Geno is that they get the best out of their players. Pat knew how to motivate a team through words and her intensity. I don't think Holly has mastered that yet.
