this thread brings up an interesting point to another argument...

Did Pearl leave the program in better shape than he found it?

Technically, he left the bball program under ncaa investigation and under recruiting restrictions.

Thankfully, he made some noise and got some people to notice UT bball while he was here... reminding people that UT bball can compete with the top bball programs in the country.

Unfortunately, he left us back at ground zero having to start the rebuilding process again with the cupboards bare (compared to those other top bball programs).

It's a hard thing to put in perspective. A renewed fanbase, Pratt Pavilion, and a commitment to winning is what Pearl brought us. But then you mention all the negatives and it's a tough call.

@florida

@lsu
Vs Vanderbilt

We're 12-12 if we don't win 4 of those that's a horrible finish. IMO 16-15 should be worst case scenario and would be taking a step backwards.

that's how i see us finishing, 16-15. if someone had told me we would win 16 regular season games this year, i would have thought they were nuts.

Short answer: yes. If ccm was taking over after buzz I don't see us being where we are now, if that makes any sense. Pratt pavilion and renovations to TBA alone are huge additions to the program.

I'm holding judgement until next year. Zo came in with hardly any time to recruit. He will have a full season, a full off-season, and another preseason...I'm not saying I'm overjoyed with this year or that anyone cares about my judgement but either way I'm just mindlessly watching this year....

Rivals did have many of our current players highly ranked. Here's the list with the number of stars, and national position rank when they were recruited out of high school:

Stokes, 5 star, #5
Maymon, 4 star, #7
McRae, 4 star, #9
Woolridge, 4 star, #11
Golden, 4 star, #13
Hall, 4 star, #21
Tatum, 4 star, #22

I'm certainly not badmouthing any of these guys, but, as a group, they haven't lived up to their high school ranking. We only have one Sr and many of these guys had not played a lot of minutes in the past. We should improve next year.

I don't think they are good as people thought they were. Which makes Tennessee look even worse.

Also, we had to pull away against the Gamecocks at HOME. We should have beat them by 20.

How the heck did we get so bad? We have talented kids.

If we would have lost schollies or been put on probation, it would be different, imo.
We went from having 12k at a game to filling the place up and playing on national tv often. That overcomes the negative press.

The problem with this list is there is no true point guard on it. Which is a lot of this team's troubles. Not bashing Golden. He is learning to play the position on the fly. If this team had an upperclassman true PG of any value they would have more wins.

The star system is based off the open NBA/AAU game and often doesn't correlate to a college system.

That's why you'll see guys that avg 10 a game going to the NBA and getting 18-20. It's also why you see lower ranked players light it up in college more than some guys that will make it in the NBA

There is so much hype involved. A player can get ranked higher due to his own marketing, how involved his HS and aau coaches are, and how many camps he goes to, even though his skill set may not have even changed.

I would take a stud wing player over a true pg. to me that'd help us a lot more, I think Goldens serviceable, but we have no offense at the 2 and 3. I'd take a kidd gilchrist or Harrison Barnes over a true pg like a Kendall Marshall. Jmo

I may be wrong, but I swear I thought Tatum was a 3*. Tatum's playing on 2 bum knees and just became the 16th player in school history with 1000 points and 200 assists. I think he deserves a break. He gets so much criticism on here and yes, he has his bad games, but he always plays tough D, and is a good facilitator on offense from the wing. Renaldo never developed like he could have. Maymon has had 3 coaches at 2 schools in his 3 years in college. Hall has finally started to bring a quality of play we have not seen until this season. Golden and McRae are sophmores' for crying out loud! 2nd coach in 2 years too with vastly differing systems. Stokes is going to be in BEAST MODE next season and potentially down the stretch this season.

My point was more to the fact that the list was missing a PG all together. Stars or no stars there is no proven or experienced PG on the team. But I do understand what your saying about how a guy gets rated and how that doesn't necessarily translate to college play.

I was just sharing information. Outside of the top 20 players, give or take a few, the rankings are about hype and promotion.
I agree about pg. It's the most important position. A good team has a good pg that has the ball in his hands for the majority of each possession. One that has a plan, skill, knows how to run an offense, can break down a defender when necessary, and can take charge of the team by directing traffic and getting the ball to the right guy in the right position to score.
