watched the main event tonight and thought kimbo did decent. definitely needs work on his ground game, but his punches are nothing but major force. great story on how his life has evolved and what he has gone through. wouldn't put my money on him right now, but give him six months and ill put all my money on him. what do you guys think of him? good or bad for elite/ufc?

he's not in the ufc. he is in elite. he has a long way to go. great stand up, but he got worn down by a guy who would get drilled in the ufc.

Kimbo was definitely only decent. He has to work a ton of his ground game before he'll be even a decent UFC guy. The fights were all fairy good after the first couple. I thought the one where the guys eye was poked was called way too early. It was nasty when the big white guys ear got popped. It was definitely an enjoyable night of fighting though I still prefer UFC.

Boxing is in a downturn, that's why this WWE type of crap is on prime time. I saw that because I was at a friends house and he wanted to watch it instead of the Stanley Cup Finals. I've heard (from my friend) that the UFC is much better and they don't do all the silly WWE intros before the fights. The Kimbo Slice dude didn't impress me any. He's just ugly and that's about it. That British guy that almost put him away didn't have any martial arts background. From what I understand, another fighter with said background would've polished him off.

EliteXC is a bit cheesy for my taste, but I was entertained. Kimbo is all hype....He has a great story and all; but he's 34 and obviously past his prime age for this kind of sport. Hopefully Elite will follow the circus out of town. The best that can come of this is that in their Absence UFC can strike a better, lucrative deal in the future.

That whole fight was more of a laugh than anything else. Yea, he's a tough guy that punches real hard. I hope this was a reality check for all his his fans claiming he'd dominate UFC. Completely winded and wasted less than halfway through the fight. Lucky for him Thompson was out of shape and his punches hit like a pillow. Would stand no chance against anyone with a background in bjj.

He looked awful against Thompson who actually lost to Butterbean in an mma fight.

:eek:lol:

As far as Elite XC, I went to one of their fights that aired on Showtime in Southhaven MS a couple years ago. It wasn't bad at all(not UFC quality, but still good). Much better than what was aired on tv last night. They'll do themselves a huge favor in the long run by trying to find and market good talent instead of names like Kimbo.

And I to thought the "eyepoke" was called early. But they said that Scott Smith told the doc that he couldn't see out of that eye not once, but twice. If true, I'd expect that call to be made.

This crap is on prime time because boxing is a boring hugfest.

.

You realize there are other weight classes than heavies, right? Check out guys like Israel Vasquez, the Marquez brothers, Kelly Pavlik, Amir Khan, Pacquaio, Cotto, Margarito, Calzaghe, there is lots of good boxing available, though lots of it can only be viewed online. I think having proven fighters on network TV somewhat regularly will bring boxing back into the spotlight.

Bob Arum, a big time promoter, has made several statements to that effect recently, i can see it happening before the year is out.

Elite MMA is terrible. Kimbo is not even a decent fighter. He is a newer version of Tank Abbott. Hits hard, great chin.
To show you the difference. Brock Lesner, former wrestling AA and National Champion took 2 years to learn boxing and BJJ. In his second fight, he was matched us with Frank Mir who has never been the same since his motorcycle wreck. Frank Mir was much smaller and nowhere NEAR as strong. Mir submitted him in the first round.

Kimbo says he'll never tap because submitting's not in his repertoire :ermm:... I cant wait to see him fight someone like Mir

Kimbo's all hype.

Brock Lesnar will be a force in mixed martial arts. Frank Mir exposed Brock's inexperience, but he incurred a ton of punishment in the process.

Lesnar doesn't have the presence of mind that veteran fighters like Mir have...but experience is something that can be acquired. Lesnar was a bit out of control in that fight - but he showed that he has the kind of awesome power and physicality that can make him a contender with the heavies.

I thought i saw him tap too, but apparently not. Pretty disappointed with the fight. i thought if they were going to call it, they would have when Kimbo got hit with about 25 elbows, not when Thompson was getting hit. Would of liked to see one more hit from Kimbo though when Thompson was obviously out of it.

by the way, that dudes ear was nasty.

yeah i'm almost positive Kimbo was trying to tap out unless he saying something we couldnt hear or something.

I can respect MMA... Kimbo's YouTube stuff is sort of entertaining, that's about it. He's got a hell of a punch, but anybody who thinks he could contend at actual decent levels of MMA is fooling themselves. That stuff takes strength AND conditioning, Kimbo has only the former.

I sort of agree with dooz, though. UFC ppv's are usually a waste of money. If they put it on prime-time tv like this EliteXC garbage got, then I might watch it more.

So what was the deal with the guys ear? Even before the match it look like something was wrong with it..

I think you guys are referring to the "thumbs up" that he waved at the ref while Thompson had him in a guillotine. It sort of looked like a tap, but he was signalling that he was ok and didn't want to submit.
