boxers don't have as much of a problem with it because they don't spend most of their time on the mat. it's why you see wrestlers wearing the head protection that they do. it keeps their ears from being rubbed all over the mat.

from wikipedia: Cauliflower ear is often the source of pride for wrestlers and fighters. Thus, they disdain the protective gear :ermm:

headgear is required in high school, i think. after that it's up the fighter.

i'm not sure what's prideful about having a jacked up ear.

Headgear is uncomfortable at best, and bugs the piss out of you (while half-choking you) at worst.

But, it beats the hell out of not being able to put on a football helmet by yourself because your ear is twice its size.

I learned my lesson after ONE drainage, and never got back on a mat without my headgear for the rest of my active wrestling career.

However, headgear is PROHIBITED at the International level, so the really elite guys can't ever really avoid getting cauli.

It is, but most coaches won't make you wear it in practice. The loud noises of a gym sort of echo around in there and it just makes the already stressful environment worse. I never wore mine in practice until my left ear got all red and swollen. That stuff is uncomfortable. Thankfully, it healed up OK. I do know a lot of guys with cauliflower ear and they proudly call them trophies.

why dont they get it cut off?

For a long time I don't think there was an effective treatment if you waited too long to deal with it. Nowadays there are some surgeries, but I'd guess they are expensive. But, since the problem is an overgrowth of scar tissue, there's no guarantee the scar tissue won't just reappear.

u can get it cut off because a kid at my school had surgery and got his cut off. his ear looks normal still.

I bet that dude isn't black. African-Americans tend to have more problems. But really it varies from person to person. Your friend is lucky.

Kimbo's all hype.

Brock Lesnar will be a force in mixed martial arts. Frank Mir exposed Brock's inexperience, but he incurred a ton of punishment in the process.

Lesnar doesn't have the presence of mind that veteran fighters like Mir have...but experience is something that can be acquired. Lesnar was a bit out of control in that fight - but he showed that he has the kind of awesome power and physicality that can make him a contender with the heavies.

I talked to Frank a few weeks after his fight with Lesner. He thinks BL will do well in the MMA world because he already had a great wrestling background. He also said that he never felt like he was in trouble during the fight. Remember, Frank has been hit by guys who punch harder than BL. He said that the only time he got worried a bit was when he was transitioning to the armbar and then flexed, he realized that Brock was to strong and couldnt pull it. Frank is smaller for a heavyweight but that was the first time that has happend to him. He easily transitioned to the ankle and the rest is history.
Experienced fighters (especially BJJ guys) can work out of just a ground and pound.
