I know our fans have complained about officiating before but this UGA fan is a little over the top!

I live in GA and have always said they have the softest fan base in college football.

IDK, the only terrible call against GA that I remember is not reviewing the 4th down play early in the game. But honestly in that case I feel that Kirby should have burned a timeout and insisted on a review.

In the end it’s football and officials just don’t get every call correct. I haven’t rewatched the game so I really don’t have an opinion on if I think the refs were blatantly calling against GA. I do know that GA came back late and had a chance to win in the end. Down by 3, all we had to do was get a stop and the GA offense likely would have scored and won or sent the game into overtime. But the Bama offense made the plays they needed to run out the clock and win the game.

As a GA fan, sure it sucks, but that’s football. No team is going to catch every break in their favor. I’m not going to look at it trying to find some conspiracy. It’s over and we lost a close game. GA has an extremely good team, but even great teams can lose. It happens every season. As stated above, Bama made a few big plays on that last drive and beat us. If we had made a few good plays defensively on that last Bama drive we might have won. Or if we had played well enough earlier in the game we wouldn’t have been in that position. But we didn’t make the plays we needed on Bama’s final drive, and we didn’t play well enough earlier to not be in that position and we lost. It sucks for us, but it happens. We aren’t the first really good team to play below our potential and lose to another really good team, and we certainly won’t be the last. It happens almost every season to an extremely good team.

That is the literally the most grounded reasonable response I have heard from a UGA fan in a long time!!!

I don’t by that for a second
He said it and I believe they gave the go ahead it was a 50/50 IMO & just according to who was reviewing & they always use that caveat it looks like it could have been reversed but it was so close they go with what the Paid-offs Refs called on the field.

Great post. As a Dawg, what are your thoughts on this playoff mess?
1. Should FSU have been in over Bama?
2. If the committee is picking the 4 best shouldn’t UGA be in?
3. Any other thoughts?

As you, I thought Kirby would call a TO to have it reviewed but was watching Finebaum to see all the reactions the following Monday. Someone said the 4th down play should have been reviewed. Finebaum said it was, he said every play was reviewed. So I figured each team had someone on the phone to the Birmingham office and they told the UGA rep it was a catch or in my mind if that had not happened, Kirby should be chastised for not calling a TO, unless he knew it was fruitless. I know Finebaum has many friends in the Birmingham office so I'm assuming he asked that ? to his insider reviewers.

It’s possible that there is legitimacy to them picking Bama. My biggest issue is that the committee isn’t consistent. In the past the committee has chosen Cincinnati and TCU only for them to get embarrassed. Sure TCU did win against Michigan, but you get my meaning. And yes circumstances are different every year but I think leaving out FSU shows blatant inconsistency.

And yes, if your biggest rule is to get the 4 best teams then GA should be in. At the very least, if Bama is ranked at 4 bc they are better than FSU, then why is FSU ranked higher than GA? Again, very inconsistent!

But my honest opinion is that the way the circumstances are this season, It was right to leave GA out, I hate it but it makes sense. Could GA have won if it got in? Absolutely very possible, but we didn’t win the SEC.

And I’ve no love for FSU, but they absolutely got hosed. I feel very bad for the Seminole players. It’s not a beauty contest, they win a P5 conference and are 13-0. I think it’s a travesty that an injury kept them out and everyone seems ok with it. Well not everyone, but many in the mainstream are praising the committee for making this decision. It just doesn’t fit with how young athletes should be taught to play the game. I was always taught that fair sportsmanship was the most important thing when competing. To me the committee looks like it was influenced at best by dollar signs and their decision certainly doesn’t look fair.

Yeah that might have been the case. I truly think it was a no catch, but I admit that I’m a fan and certainly not a rules expert. In any case though, I believe it was worth burning a time-out. But it’s over. I’m not gonna spend too much time second guessing Kirby.

Great 3 years no matter, one thing I noticed in this particular game was Bowers & McConkey were not getting their usual separation on pass routes as they did all year or when I watched. May have been the nagging injuries or the play calls.
That WR separation & Joe being a non-juking running QB was two of the things that shackled UTs Offense.

It's tough, welcome to the Bama opponent club. This year against us they only had a single 5-yard penalty which ended up helping them and Birmingham called to the officials on the field to rule on a kickoff fair catch that pinned us inside the 5 yard line. Bama fans will claim all is good and they are penalized a lot but they seem to get help at opportune times to keep drives alive and stall momentum with opponents.

They get penalized a lot against the small schools they will always win against. watch their closer games, and suddenly the flags disappear.

Bama set an NCAA record for TDs called back by penalty. But sure, "the flags disappear."

I would be interested to see that break down. I KNOW they missed at least one of the called back TDs against us.

1 for 5 against us. and the one penalty saved you guys a sack.

its like Kentucky fans complaining about the refs in Rupp Arena.

Bama has had 8 TDs called back by penalty so far in 2023. The previous record was a Fresno State team (I'm forgetting the year) with 7.

I'll admit that they missed some flags in the UT game, though I think you'd have a tough time arguing that the refs determined the outcome.

But, here's a fun game to play: does Bama only having one penalty mean the refs were in the bag for Bama? If so, what is your take on the 2016 game in which UT only had one penalty for 10 yards AND they only go that penalty because Butch Jones chose to decline an offsetting penalty by Bama given that UT wound up with good field position and he didn't want to force a rekick?

Its pretty dang telling that you have to go back 8 seasons now to find a comparison.... That was the same year we broke the streak against Florida, we definitely had some voodoo going for us that season.

This year it may not have been a pro-Bama thing, for the UT game, but there was definitely some mega-millions type luck with the home teams Tennessee played against. 1 live ball penalty in 3 games. and the one penalty came early in the first quarter of the first game. Pretty sure it continued to the 4th quarter of the 4th game. (2 in 4) that's way too much coincidence to ignore. 14 quarters on the road without a live ball penalty called on the home team. thats too much coincidence to ignore.

I could easily be wrong but I am pretty sure the missed call I am thinking of came on Bama's first score. hard to argue that isn't a change of momentum play with a direct impact on the game.
