But that's just it. Going undefeated is the only way to ensure that you have control over whether you win a championship. And in a world in which Phillip Fulmer has an undefeated season and Steve Spurrier doesn't, I would submit that a coach doesn't really control going undefeated all that well either.

I'm by no means arguing that Richt is a great coach or anything. I just think that, given the current system, it's insane to have the words "national championship" come into play when you're evaluating any coach. The BCS is too much of a crapshoot.

Winning a national championship sets you apart like it or not. He's a great coach... but he would be remember a lot differently if he wins a NC at Georgia.

Pretty sure the BCS bowls have tv contracts till 2018 or so. But if they took the winner of the BCS bowls and had a 4 team play off... then maybe that could get done soon... but I have no idea.
