But that's just it. Going undefeated is the only way to ensure that you have control over whether you win a championship. And in a world in which Phillip Fulmer has an undefeated season and Steve Spurrier doesn't, I would submit that a coach doesn't really control going undefeated all that well either.
I'm by no means arguing that Richt is a great coach or anything. I just think that, given the current system, it's insane to have the words "national championship" come into play when you're evaluating any coach. The BCS is too much of a crapshoot.
Even that is not a guarantee. See Auburn, circa 2004.
A National Championship is the crowning achievement in the sport. The lack of one does not mean Mark Richt is not a top flight coach.
