I'm sure it was Carolina's game plan to "play stupid". I'm sure they said " its no problem to stop John Wall at far from the basket". Its a game of cause and effect. If anyone on UT (or any team in the country for that matter) can run step for step with wall in the open floor off a rebound and beat him to the lane to "sit in the paint", then so be it.
But its not happening, at least on a full time basis. Its a good theory, but not as easy as you make it sound.
If your going to slack two guards back for transition D and give up rebounds, then its possible. Otherwise, I don't see it happening.
Look, I think Wall's a hell of a player and very dangerous in the open floor. But, I would be happy if UK decided to go up and down the whole game with us to avoid watching our painful half-court offense. Now, when UK is in the half-court game, I would think most rational basketball people would not advise guarding Wall 35-40 ft away from the basket as UNC did consistently the whole game. You ever wonder why the offense didn't look so good against Stanford? It's because they didn't play right into your hands like UNC. But, if it makes you feel better about your team to think that really UNC was playing smart defensively and Wall is just that much better, go right ahead.
