Let me ask you - do you now want to drain the Tub? And if so, who would you hire?
Oooh good question. I've watched Tubby for 10 years, and except for a few brilliant spurts since '98, he hasn't developed the talent that he's recruited. Today someone pointed out 7 McD's AA's that left UK after falling out with Tubby. After a while, you have to acknowledge there's a pattern here. And the elite recruits have recognized the pattern, so much so that they avoid Kentucky. Who wants to dribble the ball for 40 seconds and jack up a desperation 3? Nobody. They want to run and gun, show off their skills. I DO think that Tubby should resign, but I don't think that he will, nor will he be fired. His buyout is 9 million. Yes, 9 million. Last year, some influential boosters were rumored to have raised 7 million towards a buyout. That's some crazy money. Tubby is under contract until 2011, a long time away. Something tells me that he's out of mulligans, and this is his last year, though.
Bottom line: He's a good coach, not an elite coach. He's also a stubborn coach, unwilling to budge on his standards and style of play. That will be his ultimate undoing at UK. As a person, however, he is one of the finest human beings you'll ever meet, a fine ambassador for the University of Kentucky.
Who replaces him? Good question. You need a young coach with an exciting style of play that attracts recruits. You also need one who is committed to staying Long-Term at UK.
I think that only Billy D. would satisfy the bloodthirsty hordes in Slattery's Salt Lick, KY. I tend to agree that he'd be good for the job, but I'm certainly not in favor of pushing out Tubby just to get him to Lexington. Donovan has the best of both worlds: a D-1 basketball coach at a Football school with no expectations beyond competing for the SEC championship and the occasional FF run. Why would he want to come to Lexington? His wife is from Lex, for one. He's also spoken that his years in Lexington as a Pitino assistant were the favorite years of his life in coaching.
What will happen? I don't know, but I am confident that our AD will make the right choice. After all, Mitch Barnhart is a good old Tennessee guy, right?
