UK @ Vandy

Let me ask you - do you now want to drain the Tub? And if so, who would you hire?

Oooh good question. I've watched Tubby for 10 years, and except for a few brilliant spurts since '98, he hasn't developed the talent that he's recruited. Today someone pointed out 7 McD's AA's that left UK after falling out with Tubby. After a while, you have to acknowledge there's a pattern here. And the elite recruits have recognized the pattern, so much so that they avoid Kentucky. Who wants to dribble the ball for 40 seconds and jack up a desperation 3? Nobody. They want to run and gun, show off their skills. I DO think that Tubby should resign, but I don't think that he will, nor will he be fired. His buyout is 9 million. Yes, 9 million. Last year, some influential boosters were rumored to have raised 7 million towards a buyout. That's some crazy money. Tubby is under contract until 2011, a long time away. Something tells me that he's out of mulligans, and this is his last year, though.

Bottom line: He's a good coach, not an elite coach. He's also a stubborn coach, unwilling to budge on his standards and style of play. That will be his ultimate undoing at UK. As a person, however, he is one of the finest human beings you'll ever meet, a fine ambassador for the University of Kentucky.

Who replaces him? Good question. You need a young coach with an exciting style of play that attracts recruits. You also need one who is committed to staying Long-Term at UK.

I think that only Billy D. would satisfy the bloodthirsty hordes in Slattery's Salt Lick, KY. I tend to agree that he'd be good for the job, but I'm certainly not in favor of pushing out Tubby just to get him to Lexington. Donovan has the best of both worlds: a D-1 basketball coach at a Football school with no expectations beyond competing for the SEC championship and the occasional FF run. Why would he want to come to Lexington? His wife is from Lex, for one. He's also spoken that his years in Lexington as a Pitino assistant were the favorite years of his life in coaching.

What will happen? I don't know, but I am confident that our AD will make the right choice. After all, Mitch Barnhart is a good old Tennessee guy, right?

I watched it. We didn't want Vandy to win. I think UK should have got a call underneath at the end.

That play happened about 8 feet directly in front of me; it was a good no call.

Brian, I feel for you brother. I'm having a little bit of guilty fun watching the KY boards, but I'm stunned at Kentucky's hoops performance this year, and last year.

I'm not stunned at all; Kentucky has one of the best big men in the conference, a good SEC 2 guard in Crawford, and a bunch of limited or inexperienced players to go with them. Add the prematurely departed Rajon Rondo back to this team and they are a top 10 contender; as it stands, they are merely solid.

I had a business lunch with a big Kentucky basketball fan last week, and he wanted Donovan. Started out as a Tubby fan, but now wants Donovan. He seems to think a lot of the "demographically-biased" (his words) fans in Eastern Kentucky want Tubby out for less than noble reasons.

In a different thread, the following names were mentioned other than Donovan:

John Calipari, John Pelphrey, and Travis Ford. Any of those interest you?

Maybe stunned was too strong a word, but surprised, yes. While they lost Rondo, I thought Tubby could have done more with the talent level they had, especially when it comes to closing out close games.

I hear you about the idiots who want Tubby out for "less than noble" reasons. I edit their posts every day at wildcatnation.net.

Calipari is probably the wisest choice of the three.
Pel is a nostalgic choice, probably not likely to get past an initial interview.
Travis is not yet seasoned enough for UK, but he might be in a few years. He understands UK basketball better than Calipari.

Travis Ford...is he that relatively short white guy that seemed almost John Stockton-like in his ability to be in the right place at the right time? Sort of like Dane Bradshaw, only with offensive skills?

Well, good luck to you. Hope you all can find someone who's a better fit than Tubby at some point. I must say, I do like the way Pearl is reenergizing the rivalry - my Dad went to the University of Tennessee shortly after Mears took over the program, so Pearl is giving him back a taste of the showmanship that he enjoyed when watching Mears' teams. Here's hoping Kentucky basketball and Tennessee basketball both return to elite status, so we have something akin to UNC-Duke in our neck of the woods.

Thanks. Pearl is awesome. I love the Orange schtick he has going on. Very fun to see some life in Knoxville. He's gonna be up here in Evansville in April for a big to-do. Saw it in the paper yesterday.

thanks, I'd wondered what happened to him. I'm going to have to check out "The Sixth Man" now.

He's also the current coach of UMass.

After thinking about it for a while, Calipari is a Mitch Barnhart type of hire. I still think Ford will receive much more consideration than most believe.

Yes he did burn some bridges with some big names, however he was a VERY hot topic when the Minutemen came to Lex this year.

I got this from wkyt.com.

UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart released a statement late Monday afternoon on WIldcat Basketball.
“Kentucky Basketball is important to all of us who are a part of the Big Blue Nation. I know that the fans, coaches and players are disappointed with the results of the season up to this point, but it’s important to wait until the most critical part of the season is complete before reviewing the program.
“Our fans’ lofty expectations for this program, which I share, have not changed. However, history tells us that the college basketball season can change quite a bit between February and March. If the close games we’ve lost in February become victories during the tournaments, then this team has a chance to play up to its potential, which is what all of us as Wildcat fans want.”

Seems to hint that a change could be coming. Someone on this board said the buyout is $9 million. Wow.

My opinion: The great UK teams have always had great on-court leaders. In the Tubby era: the '98 senior class, the '99 senior class, Prince, Chuck Hayes, etc. Now, UK has Bradley and an NBA free agent. Bradley can knock down some big shots and can get under your skin, but he doesn't strike me as a quality leader like Hayes.

I'll bite. Will Tubby's legacy be the giveaway of Lofton? ESPN sure doesn't stop talking about it whenever the two teams play each other. By the way, on TV, Tubby looked ready to break down as he paced the bench while Vandy shot FTs with 9.7 seconds left. And, I second the statement that Tubby is certainly one of the nicest guys around.

Check out this erudite masterpiece from a KY fan today about the refs:

"a lot of uk down fall here last couple of years has been not only players and tubby but the refs has cost us alot of games. there is alot of young refs who grew up when uk was the team in sec and college that they decided that when they get a chance to screw uk that they do it and it cost uk games. tubby need to start voice his opinions about the refs to sec."

Apparently the downfall of UK is the fans who can't conjugate verbs correctly

An interesting recap of the situation from today's Herald-Leader:

Believe me, I know. They're a special breed in Possum Trot.

Of course, every Tennessean I've met is an educated, cultured being of gentility and refinement. :stinker2:

The buyout is 1.5 million.

The buyout is 1.5 million.

According to the Herald-Leader, his retention bonus payable at the end of this year is 1.5 million. His buyout is 1 million for each year remaining on his contract which currently runs through 2010-11, or 4 million.

I'd post a link to the article, but I just did it 4 posts above:thumbsup:

Or even worse, Vandy fans! Talk about trying to put lipstick on a pig.

A smart pig, at least. Some of the more intelligent poster's on this forum are Vandy grads, you know:sleep:

By the way, by the look of things at the UK/Vandy game the other day, the Commodore cheerleading squad has not improved aesthetically since I was in school.
