UMass football moving up to FBS.

Why would a team like Georgia State, whose first season of football was in 2010, be thinking about jumping to the FBS?

I'm guessing here and I don't think it would be a good move but:

1) There's enough talent in Georgia for them to field a competitive C USA team without ever leaving the state to recruit

2) They have faith in Bill Curry

3) A lot of financial backing from boosters

Does UMass sell tickets currently? If they do, then a move to 1-A is not a bad idea. Even the crappy conferences provide more money in 1-A than the best conferences in 1-AA. But if they aren't currently selling tickets then it's completely pointless.

They are getting like 12,000 out of 17,000 seats. It really doesn't add up, the area could really give a Sh less about CFB overall. I'd wager that they are closer to breaking even in FCS than they would be moving up.

If they can't fill a 17k seat stadium, then they would lose their shirts if they moved up.

UNC-Charlotte doesn't even start play until 2013 and they've already said they're going to move up to the FBS as quickly as possible. People look at teams like South Florida (which played its first game in 1997 and has already gone to six consecutive bowls from a BCS conference) and Florida Atlantic (first game ever in 2001, has already played in a couple of bowls) and they convince themselves it's easy. Nobody wants to play in the minor leagues if they don't have to.

If you could make a magic wand and make all the financial and Title IX issues disappear and put Georgia State in CUSA, they have a lot of potential. They play in downtown Atlanta in the Georgia Dome. All they'd have to do is start pulling all the talented local kids that don't have the grades or aren't quite good enough for UGA or Georgia Tech. I could easily see that program being a really good mid-major in a dozen years or so.

Title IX's a b****, though.

Gstate sold its soul to CAA for the basketball/football bid bc they couldn't get into the southern conf bc of Ga Southern...the school would have to fork out some money if they leave before 5 years. SOuth Ala will be a major upgrade for CUSA at some point..I don't see them staying in the Sun Belt that many years once they go FBS in 2013 but UAB could blocked the invite.

smart move actually... can schedule four beatdowns a year by top 25 schools and make 2 million per year just from four games... thereby enabling them to send the women's volleyball team 500 miles away to play some meaningless game... they're doin it for the money... uconn example in football was a function of the distance they had to travel for the bowls, exorbitant hotel bills for over 120 football players and staff... and the fact they have very poor attendance/ticket sales.. division 1 beatdowns make alot of needed money for the montana's of the college football world

I graduated from Southern Illinois.

This move will go over like it would if SIU decided to jump to I-A. Not well, IMO.

On the other end, I don't think that I-AA is going to set anyone on fire, ever. It's enough of a money drain that I can see a bunch of schools just deciding it's not worth the problem to field a football team.

Then again maybe not... you have to go from paying 63 scholarships to 85.. then increase your womens scholarship numbers by 22 to satisfy title IX.. here is an example.. one would have to weigh the increased expected revenue from gettin your a** handed to you against the increased operating costs.. would work for some but not for others

The article I cited says UMass would be the 15th member. I believe they would only be the 14th member for football.

Gosh, you'd think the fans would revolt considering they currently can participate in a playoff.

And they'll play in Gillette Stadium which holds 69,000. The stadium is also 93 miles away from Amherst, which I think is kind of retarded.

I'd be all for a home and home. That said, UMASS moving up in football is idiotic.

I don't understand how an arrangement with UMass would make sense. If you want to visit the NE occasionally, why not ask Boston College for a home and home??
