Please bear with me everyone. I may become a moderator of a new baseball umpires forum that will be launched shortly after the first of the year.

We are strongly considering using this message board format for our new board.

I'm going to be making a few post's to feel this format out a bit.

If you have a baseball rules question, please feel free to ask me. It will help me as I test out the boards functionality.

When the club pays the players, who picks up the check for the first baseman?

:nener: :mf_surrender:

Should we start the optional mechanics discussion? I don't think we've heard ALL the sides of it yet.

This thread is what I envision it would be like if a room full of Memphisvol clones ever started having a conversation.

I've always wondered how that infield fly rule works...

Are you asking about the small flying insect buzzing around a pitchers head causing him to committ a balk?

Or, are you asking about a routine fly ball on the infield with runners on first and second, or first second and third with less than two outs?

I got this one, Tim.

1st - One Irish Fan (I think that's you BU56), one die hard AU Tiger fan (WAR EAGLE!!) No such luck getting a Vol Fan (especially Vol Football), one from Southern Cal - no telling who he roots for!! :matrix:

2nd - Infield fly Rule -Less than 2 outs, runners at least on 1st and 2nd - fair batted ball in the air (with an arch) that could be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, batter is out. Runners may advance at their own peril, after the ball is touched (or caught). The ball MUST be fair, but does not have to be caught. To complicate matters, slightly, the ball does not have to be caught by an infielder. It must be hit such that an infielder COULD catch it with ordinary effort (no spectacular dives as he retreats to the outfield).

That's how the infield fly works, basically - unless you were talking about the little bug buzzing around the pitcher's head that makes him balk. I'll leave that one for BigUmp to handle.

Yes, the thread has taken an odd route. The three of us that have posted have been in a rather lengthy, some what heated, discussion and we may just be letting off a little steam.

Thanks for tolerating it. With a minor amount of tolerance, the posts will get more into discussions concerning rules, their application, and their interpretation.

Welcome to the board.

Out of curiosity . . . How did a bunch of non-Vol fans who are really interested in talking umpiring stumble across this board?

 We've got everyone else's opinion. We might as well start asking baseball umpires.

Yes, it will be Matt Leinart.

By the way, Darien, I'm a lifelong Trojan fan. No bandwagoner here. I jumped on that one before O.J. played there.

I'm the one who directed my associates here. A link to this board was provided to me by someone I would imagine is one of your own. As I said earlier, we will be opening up a new web site soon for baseball umpires. The site will have a forum for all types of baseball discussions, mostly centered on the art of officiating the game itself.

The format of this particular board has been recommended by the new Web Master. We're here checking it out. I really do appreciate your patience with us. We certainly don't want to disrupt the flow and camaradarie you seem to have on your board.

On the football issue:

I'm a huge ND fan. I live only 5 minutes from the campus. I've spent many hours getting hammered with some of you Vol's fans while tailgaiting. I enjoy the rivalry.
