In case anybody is interested, my moniker is Augie Donatelli, who was a famous National League umpire, who retired from the game in 1973.

They usually have a good team. I hope they do get there. If someone from FL goes, I'd rather it be them!!!

Curious, though - What about LSU? Are they going to run at it again? They put on the most impressive batting expedition I've seenin a long time (a couple of years ago). HR by everyon in the line up. WOW!! :post-20645-1119625378:

Which bad call are you referring to? The Doug Eddings piss poor mechanics on the uncaught third strike by Josh Paul?

Or, are you talking about another call.

You could very possibly be talking about a couple of other calls.

One call that caused a fuss was a running lane violation called on Cano by Joe West.

The other controversial call was made by Phil Cuzzi on a missed touch of the base on a phantom double play.

Let us know, and we'll try to break the plays down for you, and let you know what we think of those three calls.

Doug Eddings used poor mechanics on the third strike not caught play.

He should not have given his usually routine out call. He should have pointed emphatically and said "no catch, no catch" or "balls down, balls down" to indicate it was in the dirt.

The problem is that he was unsure about whether or not the pitch was caught. He looked down to the 3rd base umpire for help, but Ed Rapuano didn't give him any signal either way. That's happening right after Pierzinski (sp) took off for first. So, he had to rule immediately. The ball appeared to have hit the dirt with the naked eye. Fox replay inconclusive. Comcast replay showed the ball on the ground just barely.

The real reason the play was screwed up was the catcher, Josh Paul, who should have just tagged the runner just in case, as all catchers are taught to do back in high school.

Tim,
I thought I'd give this a go. BIZARRE! Here I am, west coast Canadian, on a Tennessee Vol site, talking baseball with someone from Indiana.
AND I have a hangover today such that my skull is really incapable of keeping my (apparently) swollen brains in.
So it the gig that you are just looking to use this format - or what?
Right... English soccer on the tv... need food and coffee!

In all fairness, the umpires got a lot of very close plays right. The questionable calls were all made in real-time action, without the benefit of instant replay, of which you and I enjoy the luxury. They get one shot at it, and trust me, all you "never umpired before" type people, it is much harder than it looks on TV.

Instant replay usually bears out the fact that the umpires are right 99.9% of the time. Even the best Gold Glove shortstop cannot compare his fielding percentage to an umpires correct call percentage. If umpires missed calls like the Gold Glover made errors, they would be fired for incompetence.
