Underrated QB: AJ Westendorp

I've debated with you in the past Rex. I think you do a wonderful job keeping us informed on recruiting, but I have to say you regularly downplay any guy you don't discover or any guy who doesn't have legit D-I offers. Thought you would've learned by now, geez.

Yeah, kind of like Bryce Petty who is now getting offers from Arkansas. Schofield who had only been offered by Charleston Southern before UT now has half a dozen legit offers. Shawn Southward, the two star who was the best back at AL/MS allstar game last week who is finally getting D-I offers. All guys you have downplayed in the past.

It may not mean much, but SVSU and SDSU are both top 5 Div. II powerhouses.

please dont try to use Arkansas's offer to petty, they only want him to be a back up to ryan mallet now that nathan dick will transfer. As far as JS, o-lineman are much harder to evaluate and can fly under the radar for long periods as opposed to qb's, apples and oranges.

Just remember Romo went to Eastern Illinois. Not all good QB's go to top D1 programs, and sometimes QB's that do go to great programs don't do so hot. By the way Sean Berman goes to the same school as Renaldo Woolridge attended (Harvard Westlake).

and Troy Aikman went to UCLA, Peyton Manning to Tennessee, Tom Brady to UM, Matt Cassell to USC, Matt Ryan to BC, etc. Of course there will be guys that slip through the cracks, but that is the exception rather than the rule.

Most of the reason that we have struggled in the past is the fact we have taken recruits in that should have went to more of a mid major school. Sorry GV, you are wrong on this one. Also, most of the two and three star guys you are talking about have had higher level schools watching them as well. They just don't offer until they can see if they excel against higher competition.

And how is that 5* QB Jonathon Crompton working out.

The point is that stars are not all they are cracked up to be. Just like Kiffin said he was looking for football speed not track speed.

That's true and I am an advocate of removing stars altogether. Thing is though, 50-70% of the time Rivals gets the stars right which is pretty good considering the amount of players they have to evaluate.

If their rate is 50% that means they miss it half the time. That is a lot of players slipping through the cracks.

Back to the earlier post, didn't one of the best players in the NFL go to UTC?

Yeah, and the greatest receiver ever to play the game went to Miss. Valley St. Rivals isn't perfect by any means and Scout sucks worse at football, but getting over half the evaluations they do correct out of the amount of film they watch and interviews they conduct is pretty good.

He got tricked into it though. I'm not sure on the details, but he's not a happy alumni.

He went to UTC because he was tiny. I think he was like, 5'11 150 or something. Not positive, but I seem to remember that in reading his book a few years ago. Then after his sophomore year I think, he turned into a monster in the weight room.

Goodness.... The country is littered with great QB's that don't get noticed. I'm a rivals/scout geek, but I'm smart enough to know that *'s don't mean everything (it does help). Kiffin will find a guy he has faith in.

Talking about Owens? I believe there were also grade concerns that kept him from going to a bigger school. Is that not correct?

Just watched a replay of the championship game and AJ threw for over 300 yards. They was talking about all the records he has broke. Looked like a good qb to me

I'm not really sure, it's possible though. I read his book like 5 years ago though, and it seemed his size was one of the main issues of going to a small school.
