I think part of the problem is Adidas. I like not being part of Nike but think Adidas treats us like red headed step child as well. They farm out the uniforms but I think they slap on any shade of orange they want on the stuff they make.
That couldn't be farther from the truth. We are far from the "stepchild." We currently have the third-richest adidas contract, trailing only Michigan and Notre Dame. Our contract is bigger than all but one Nike contract. adidas also provides an on-campus rep that works with all of our programs.
Every manufacturer "farms out" uniforms to companies whose primary business is making uniforms. Not a single Nike jersey comes from a Nike factory, either. In fact, some products come from the same factories.
As far as the shades of orange, adidas works very hard to get it right on every jersey that every Tennessee team wears. Obviously, it doesn't all always line up, for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest issues is, adidas doesn't make helmets or helmet decals.
As far as the football uniforms last year, when the TechFit jerseys debuted, they were the result of a great deal of effort in colormatching to the "correct" PMS 151. The matte finish that the material has made them appear much lighter under the lights at the Music City Bowl. Oddly enough, the same jersey was worn at night at Neyland against Alabama and there wasn't a problem. Saw several still photos from the MCB where the difference in color was barely noticeable. It certainly wasn't overly noticeable in person at the game.
The pullover that Dooley wore that was clearly a different shade was from several years ago. He liked it for its simplicity. That's also why you didn't see it at retail.
Other schools have similar colormatching issues, but our unique shade makes it stick out more in our minds. But we are far from the only one. Look at most every other program with a unique color scheme and you'll see similar problems. North Carolina, Texas, South Carolina, they all have the issue.
