I think there's a story about it somewhere on the UT website. Something to the effect that they unearthed it many years ago when building the newer fraternity houses across the street from the track and intramural fields. It was so large they didn't want to haul it off or bust it up so they pushed it to the side next to Volunteer Blvd just to get it out of the way. It stayed there once construction was completed and over time, students started painting stuff on it. Once they reconstructed the music building, they relocated it to the corner outside the new building. I think it was a fairly major undertaking as the stone was so heavy they had to bring in special equipment to move it.

When was this painted?
Because today's livestream shows a very different rock...

It changes almost daily. A couple of people or a group will paint a nice mural in the morning then by late afternoon it will be streaked with graffiti. It's rare for anything to stay untouched for more that a couple of days.

Question for you experts. When did the Rock become a thing? I attended 1975-1979 and lived on campus the entire time, and I never heard of or saw this rock. Yet Wiki says it’s been around since 1966. Was I just living under a rock to not know about it?

Payton Miller. I think what impressed me the most about her, was that she was a biochemistry major, who just dabbled in art as a hobby. Imagine being that good at something, which you don't even spend much time with.
