Unofficial 114th US Open Thread from Pinehurst Thread

Kaymer at 9 under; 7 ahead of the nearest competitor. Good for him but I hate it when someone runs away with this tournament. Kinda ruins the painful fun of watching those in contention struggle through the last day.

Kaymer started out like this at TPC, but ended up coming back to the field before pulling out the win. He's going to be tough to beat, though. He just doesn't have bad holes.

This would be a FANTASTIC setup for the weekend if it weren't for Kaymer. There are 29 players currently between -3 and +1. Unfortunately, there's one player at -10.

The course is what a US Open should be. Good, solid strokes allow for scores to be made, but you can't get too greedy or you'll pay. Dearly.

At least get mad at the right people- Coore and Crenshaw. Don't think the greenskeeper had much of a say in the setup.

Also, this isn't close to the joke that congressional was. That was not a US Open test.

Pretty sure the grounds crew have never been blamed for course design.

You do realize not every course will look like Augusta right?

I also realize that this event has been planned for years, its the USGA's Super Bowl, its in a moderate climate, irrigation isn't an issue. There's no reason it should look like Lambeau Field in January.

Aesthetics.

What in the hell are you PMS'n about?

Aesthetics is exactly what Pinehurst #2 is about. It's a golf course cut through sandhills. They could easily pour topsoil in there, water the crap out of it and have it look like a sod farm like the Phoenix Open, but that's not what Donald Ross was going for.

You're talking course design. I'm talking course management.

You want a lush, green and perfectly manicured course, go play #6. Or #8. This was the design for #2.

Whatever you do though, don't come here and play the Dormie Club. You'll throw a tempter tantrum.

no you're not. This is how Sandhills courses are. To get the style and feel of what Pinehurst was meant to be, this is what happens.

I'm familiar. I've been to Pinehurst several times. Thanks for the info.

Weird how #2 was so much greener when I was there, they must've really screwed something up since the fairways should be all brown.

I don't know how you missed the memo. Coore and Crenshaw stripped it down. Around half of the sprinklers are gone.

It's looking exactly as intended. Not sure how u missed the news.

The plan was to establish the course as the original design; prior to crazy irrigation systems .

It's different but unique and I think looks pretty cool.

I played #5 last year and it was perfect too.

Why does no one bother to tell me when they come by this way?

Outside of vol in ok/il/ar I might be the worst regular on here. our 85s look pedestrian to y'all, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy a round with a VNer.

Thinking about planning a guys trip to pinehurst in the future. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of renting a house for a few days and probably 4 rds of golf. The only thing I've looked at was the Carolina hotel and that was very pricey.

You'll spend such little time in the hotel, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Look up hotels in the Southern Pines/Aberdeen area and go from there. As for courses, there are so many. I would definitely look at least one Pinehurst course, Dormie Club, Tobacco Road, National and Pine Needles.

Kaymer is all over the map. 3 bogeys and an eagle. How he saved bogey after the first putt on six is mind boggling.
