DH: "Dave Serrano is good for this community in Dave Hart's opinion."
Nothing like speaking in third person, I called the wife in for that one.
Jimmy Hyams: "Is there a concern with giving him one year, the impact it might have on recruiting?"
DH: "No, and I've answered that question for many, many years. I think that is over sold. There was a time, when with the exception of football and basketball coaches, every coach had a one year contract. So no, I don't have that concern and...and...I think you'll hear from Dave that he doesn't either."
LOL! Ya think? Is that foreshadowing or intimidation? I kid.
Yeah, I suppose there was a time when coaches had little leverage and were satisfied with one year deals...but it probably isn't in the television contract era and it sure wasn't the case for the head baseball coach at FSU or Alabama during his tenures at those schools.
But he's going to contradict this statement anyway.
DH: "As a matter of fact, recruiting doesn't just happen in one year segments. What Dave and his staff have been doing the last two to three years, they know exactly who we're trying to sign this year. It's not an instantaneous two month process it's a two or three year process."
So much goodness in this one I don't even know where to start. He emphasizes it's a two to three year recruiting process while justifying a one year deal...for a second consecutive year. Of course they know who they are trying to sign this year, they've already signed! Half the class committed in the summer of 2014, the rest committed in 2015 and the 2016 class signed LOI's in November of 2015.
We have 6 kids committed for 2017, Vandy has 18, UF 13, SC 15. In fact we are last in the SEC East right now, if only by a few to Missouri, Georgia and Kentucky.
But to cap it all off and crystalize the strategy...
CDS: "We gotta continue to hit the road recruiting. As soon as I'm done here I'm going to meet with my staff, then we're all three going to hit the road.
We had to hold off until we knew exactly what was happening but we'll be pretty busy over the next couple of weeks and as my coaching staff will hear we will not look into '18 and '19 and beyond."
Hold off why? Because you didn't want to be out on the road recruiting '17, '18 kids when you didn't know if you were going to have a job?
Won't look into "18 and '19 and beyond because you don't know what the future holds?
CDS continues: "We are going to assemble next year's team and have guys in place, deal with our recruits, all the recruits, we're really excited about this recruiting class, we've gotta retain them, we've gotta get them on campus. So we're gonna have to do home visits with them we're going to educate them on why we think coming to school is a big thing, a right thing in most situations."
All in next year, I get it...he can't afford to worry about two years from now because he's forced to only care about winning next year.
This is how you build a baseball program with one year contracts. Ya'll buy it?
Second best quote, as Dave Hart finishes the Q&A...
DH: "Thank you men."
