Update on why Sampson didn't play?

With much respect for things you bring to the forum, Larry, Mincey was held out due to repeated curfew problems, and the pot citation. The citation forced Heupel to do something. He was allowed to travel because he has friends and family in Florida. He played special teams to justify him going. They absolutely do not prefer Crawford.
Well then, can Crawford play center? Asking for a friend.

This staff is overly obsessed with experienced upperclassmen regardless of their playmaking ability (see the secondary). I won't be surprised if he does hit the portal at seasons end. Not sure of the rules, but I think he can still claim a redshirt? The other thing I question is how you sell "early playing time" on the recruiting trail? It's absolutely mind blowing to see how the air around this program has changed from the Clemson bowl game to this moment. From the top of the world to the depths of hades in 8 short months.
Based on the first three games, I would be completely fine seeing our younger guys get a fair number of snaps and gaining the experience early. Particularly in the secondary.

Slaughter has a foot injury. Tested in warmups but was a no go.

Mincey played special teams so he was not suspended.

There were limited offensive snaps in the first half so they never had a chance to get Sampson in at that point. Then they were down and I'm sure just went with their top two backs trying to come back. Nothing sinister going on.
Small is not better than Sampson - not even close.

No idea except what Heupel said. They preferred Crawford. A suspension would have left him in Knoxville.
Mincey needs to play from here on out, Crawford may practice better but he didn’t play well at all in Florida. I think Mincey is better overall but I am not the coach that sees them everyday. I do know we need the depth that Mays and Mincey will help this line greatly.

Not usually good when it’s this quiet. Usually a coach gets out ahead of these if a player is banged up or disciplined.
Heupel said yesterday the Sampson was banged up and that is why he didn’t play. People putting out wrong info if saying otherwise.

Listening to Basilio this afternoon, when asked about Sampson not playing he said his source said Sampson was highly perturbed that he didn’t get on the field and made it known. Said the coaches still don’t trust him to block, but other than early last season, he seems to have done fine with that. We don’t need this guy, as electric as he is with tons of upside potential, heading to the portal. I just think it’s a colossal failure to not use Sampson in a game where you need a guy that has a legit shot of taking it to the house every time he touches the ball.
Basillo is WRONG, Sampson was banged up and was a game time decision. Slaughter had a foot injury. Tony is right about 2 times out of 10 and horribly wrong on the other 8. GBO

I agree getting the younger talent on the field some can’t hurt. Especially when certain ones keep making the same mistakes. I am talking mainly secondary, talent trumps experience when experience is getting it done. GBO

It makes zero sense that it was not a discipline issue if he was playing on special teams. Has he regressed that much?
Mincey if from Florida so had a bunch of friends and family in attendance. That may have played into Heups decision to let him travel and play on special teams.

Coach also stated Mays would be back for Florida
I agree with that, and don’t know why he would say that and then not play him. But I find it hard to believe he would say folks were hurt if they weren’t. I do agree they need to either not say nothing or be straight. Don’t tell us Mays is going to play then not play him. If he isn’t going to play just say it for goodness sakes. GBO

They say that, but who knows. Used a lot to avoid the discussion going further. Wrt Basilio, that was from a source of his, he didn’t say it was gospel. I’ve seen Tony be correct on an awful lot of things as well. I mean, that’s what talk show hosts do… they go out on a limb sometimes. Part of the entertainment factor.

Basilio was 100% right on Mays not playing when Heupel said he was ready to play at Florida so

Yep. He’s also said, according to his source, Mays himself has told friends all along it would likely be into October before he returns. Basilio has cultivated some pretty good relationships over there over time. I don’t expect anyone to be always right on this stuff.

Good to see Wright getting more carries and hope it continues.... But Sampson is the more explosive and more upside than Small. Neither are great as pass protection but experience would be better for Sampson to get better overall

coach said the week before the Virginia game they hoped to have him back and he had not even practiced since his surgery... Heuple loves playing that game. Only thing I can figure out.

Sampson has the potential to be an NFL player and it would be a travesty to lose him to the portal at season's end.
