That's the part I don't get about baseball draft HS players can get drafted but not all college players

They can get drafted out of HS, I bet a quick google search could tell us whether Burns and Beam were, they most certainly were, but once you choose college over the draft slot, you gotta do your 3 years of college, Covid years kinda messed with it.

Mods, thank you for the thread pin.

Here is the latest Diamond Vols podcast from GoVols247’s Ben McKee, Wes Rucker, and VFL Will Heflin. It was posted yesterday (Friday, 6/23) and they discuss a variety of topics about Tennessee baseball. It is part overall season reflections, current “state of the program” and a look ahead to the future. Since they discuss roster management, I’m sharing this episode of their podcast here.

(Note: Ben mentions an impeding transfer pitcher commit towards the end of the episode. It’s AJ Causey. The episode was posted before his Instagram announcement.)

@vol66 posted this in the Portal thread and I'm reposting it here. Thanks for the category breakdown, 66!

I’m just gonna put this here…broken up in categories.

Graduating (doesn’t mean they won’t get drafted)

Griffen Merritt
Camden Sewell
Kirby Connell*
Zane Denton*

Good luck to the fellas above, VFL’s!!!

Will lose to the draft…
Maui Ahuna
Chase Dollander
Seth Halvorsen
Andrew Lindsey
Jared Dickey

Will likely get drafted, but a choice to come back…or hit the portal…
Zach Joyce
Cal Stark
Zander Sechrist
Kyle Booker

Draft eligible players…could return, could hit portal…
Logan Chambers
Ethan Payne
Bryce Jenkins
Hollis Fanning

(~) We also have some redshirt Sophomore’s that might be draft eligible based on age. Not likely to be drafted, but certainly could look for greener pastures.
(~)Hunter Ensley

I will apologize in advance if I missed someone. Good luck to all these young men!!! VFL’s one and all.

(*) denotes possible grad year/Covid

GBO!!!

To my understanding, which admittedly isn't always great, these are the times a guy is eligible to be drafted.

SR in high school
If going to a JUCO, they can be drafted after either their FR or SO years
If going to D1, typically they can be drafted anytime after their third year on campus (typically JR or Redshirt SO season). They can be drafted after two years on campus if they turn 21 before the draft date (typically referred to as draft-eligible sophmores).

It is very confusing, that is for sure. Hope that helps a little.

The 2023 MLB Draft begins Sunday, July 9th, 2023 at 7PM EDT (ESPN, MLB Network) and ends Tuesday, July 11th, 2023. There are 20 rounds in this year's draft.

When: July 9, 2023 (Round 1, 2) at 7PM EDT; July 10, 2023 (Rounds 3-10) at 2PM EDT; July 11, 2023 (Rounds 11-20) at 2PM EDT

TV channels: ESPN, MLB Network (Round 1)

Where: Lumen Field, Seattle, WA.

Like last year, I decided to use Google spreadsheets this year to keep track of our draft-eligible players, incoming freshman class /signees, JUCO class, and (outgoing/incoming) transfers. Scroll down, and at the bottom of the spreadsheet, you will see four tabs for the four categories mentioned above. You can toggle back and forth between tabs to see players and their info. If anyone has additional info, please let me know in the replies, and I’ll do my best to update. During the draft, I'll try to update our draftees with round and MLB team.

I'll also update this OP with additional links, articles, and information as they become available. Feel free to post any links or info you find. Thanks everyone!

You're welcome! Glad to be helpful.

I’m currently gathering info about our high school signees, and will follow up again once I’m done.

Per VQ, we should keep an eye on the following commits during the MLB Draft: Bradke Lohry, Brayden Sharp, Dean Curley, Blake Grimmer, Derek Schafer, Cole Eaton, Ariel Antigua, and Matt Dallas. Although this doesn't necessarily mean they are most likely going to the MLB, they are the ones we should be paying attention to.

@TN_gal Thank you for the info. Great job.

Are Trip Brown and Alex Perry, both JUCO's, no longer coming to TN? Or maybe they committed for a later class.

@cthvolsfan, I have added Alex Perry to the 2023 JUCO class list.

While Trip Brown is a JUCO commit, he was listed as a Freshman on this past year's Spartanburg Methodist roster, so he will be in next year's 2024 JUCO class.

Grover Brown

I also removed JUCO commit INF Marcus Phillips from the list as he was a Freshman at Iowa Western Community College this past year, so he'll also be in next year's 2024 JUCO class.

Marcus Phillips

Carson Rucker is projected higher than all of those guys. VQ didn’t mention him?

Thank you @TN_gal. I saw earlier this year where Marcus Phillips was the top JUCO pitcher at one point. He should slot in nicely next year.

You’re welcome! I didn’t know that about Marcus Phillips - thanks for sharing! That’s fantastic. I agree - he should be a nice addition to our pitching staff next year.
