USA Today Coaches Poll

So that puts us at 39th... do we deserve more at this point?

If we can win 8 games this year, expect us to be in or right outside of the top 25.

If we aren't in the top 15 around this time next year, it will be time to worry.

Be aware that the team that's "mediocre", "also rans in their own conference", "middle of the pack", "never going to be good enough", is ranked 8th.

I agree with your assessment about this mediocre team, which has not been ranked in top 10 since 1994, and has only been ranked five (5) times in the final season ranking since 1994. Ranked 8th in the preseason? I wouldn't read too much into that because I still remember how preseason #3 Tennessee turned out in 2005.

Not sure about that. If we go 8-5 this season and don't really have an indicator one way or the other (i.e., a strong finish or a blowout win in the bowl game) for the writers who don't pay attention to returning starters, top 15 wouldn't be a certainty by any means.

The biggest problem with the "coaches" poll is that most coaches don't even bother to vote in the poll. It was revealed years ago that the majority of them pass the task off to some low level assistant. So, don't put any credence in the "Coaches Poll".

Returning all but 2 or 3 of your starters after an 8 win season should put us in the top 15.

Especially if the East is down again next year.

Gripe much? Tejas is down, Nebraska left, and you play in the big 12. 3 teams in the SEC West could win your conference. You would not be ranked that high if you were added to the SEC W dude.

Me thinks oklahoma would be favored over every team in the sec maybe save bama, and even then it'd be a coin flip.

What I hate about polls is how they put Auburn and Florida in the top 25.... Some magazines have auburn finishing last in the or division and they lost the 2 best players in college football. I'll be surprised if they finish .500.
As farvas Florida goes their only saving grace is the East is awful. Ateam may win the East with 3 losses but they're not that good.

Favored yes, but could they win? Remember, they would have 5 other SEC teams to contend with and Oklahoma is known for overlooking a team or two a season.

Yes, if Oklahoma were in the SEC, I would pick them to win the conference.

I would not. However that is my opinion. I simply don't believe their offense would hold up against some of the defenses they would see in the SEC.

Sad thing is...not being invited to the SEC may be the best thing that has happened to Aggie Football in recent history. If you guys ever do make it to the SEC, you'll learn to love 8-4 seasons, if you keep playing the way you have.

Go Vols.
