USC Sticking With Helton

I think they will be up and down as they land star skill players. The PAC12 is notoriously weak and a 2 team conference at any given point and time. There is zero reason for USC to not be #1 in recruiting in conference regardless of the coach.

I'd choose Oregon or Washington in a heartbeat over USC. Being in a college town with a fan base that cares matters so much to a lot of players.

Honest question, is USC done being a perennial power? They caught lightning in a bottle with the Caroll years, but other than that stretch, USC has been pretty meh since the late 80's. They didn't win 10 games once in the 90's. Their best record in the last 11 years is 10-2, and that was in 2011. It's LA, it's PAC 12, the students don't care that much, the uniforms are so ugly and outdated, the stadium is a little over half full, etc. Why do players want to go there?

I think if the PAC-12 were better I would say yes, but it’s ripe for the taking and I think the blunders made by the administration have had a big impact on their current situation . Sound familiar?

I think if you couple the right guy in there with the idea that a player can profit from his likeness then what better place to build your own personal brand than LA? I will say the difference between now and when Carroll was there was the fact that they were the only show in town. Now you have 2 NFL teams, the Dodgers are good, LeBron , the Clippers are actually appointment viewing and there is just a ton of stuff to do in Los Angeles . USC was basically an NFL team when they were so good back in the Mid 2000’s. They may never have a run like that again, but they should always be in the CFP discussion at least once every 3 or 4 years.

Absolutely not. USC has had periods of dominance in the 30s, 40s, 60s, the 70s, and the 2000s. They are a sleeping giant, and a sleeping giant that wouldn't be emerging for the first time. Once they find a good coach who gets that program running, they'll run the Pac 12. Unless there's some kind of giant, sudden demographic change, there's absolutely no reason why USC should be bad or mediocre at football for any period longer than a year or two.

I think you hit on why they were meh in the 90s - it's LA. It isn't the center of the CFB universe, and I don't think their admin/boosters/fans demand excellence. I remember hearing stories of home conference games not being sold out during the midst of Bush's 2005 Heisman run and vacated national title season; there just aren't simply enough people that care there. They like it when the program is excellent, sure, but do they demand it like the big SEC, Big Ten, ACC, or Big 12 schools do? They don't.

Certainly nothing to do with unis...Alabama's are ugly and outdated too.

This. The more I travel around the country (and especially around the world), I see more and more on how much of an island you are if you are truly passionate about college football. It's particularly funny and interesting to get into conversations with non-Americans about college sports - it is really difficult for them to 1) wrap their heads around exactly what it is and 2) understand why it's so popular, even more popular than professional sports in some regions of the country.

Outside of the southeast (including Texas/Oklahoma) and the upper midwest, CFB honestly isn't that big of a deal. I really didn't truly realize that until I got into my early 20s and started to "see the world" more, so to speak. CFB is unique in that it doesn't register on a lot of regions' radars, but in the regions where it is popular it is really, really popular. As in "I plan my fall schedule around it" popular.

From a longwhorn that posts on the Baylor forums:

Mr Tulip 2:50p

The scuttlebutt is he's (Graham Harrell)interviewed with Herman last night. Right now, the job would be his to take.

He reached out to Texas first, so there is interest. That was likely when the prospect of Helton being fired was looming large. He seems to have his choice of the Texas OC position, the USC OC position, or HC candidate at UNLV or UTSA.

I think he should take the UNLV job, work his way up the ladder, and the Texas job will be his someday.
Yeah think so too..u get the Rebs to a bowl and u are set..the SoCal and Arizona teams are down now plus the transfer portal has tons of players..some would probably love to spend a year in Vegas

I don't think the City of Seattle really cares all that much about Washington Huskies football. Eugene, yes.

Maybe the city as a whole doesn't, but my sister lives right by their football stadium and it feels real college spirit-y. Purple everywhere and they have one of the top stadium experiences, they're well attended and loud. My point is USC doesn't have any of that. Playing in a 2/3 full Coliseum is nothing in comparison.

USC also isn't very good right now and the people who do care want the coach fired, so I'm sure that has something to do with the apathy. Washington meanwhile is coming off 2 conference titles in 3 years and has an on-campus stadium.

The City of LA does get into USC football when they are good and it is "cool" to do so, but they certainly aren't embraced by the city like other programs are, you are right about that. USC kind of has a Miami thing going on where they aren't the #1 ticket in town, don't play in an on-campus stadium, etc., but when they are good people pay attention. Those places will never be like Tennessee, where nearly 90k people show up the week after one of the most embarrassing losses in program history and a 5-7 mark the previous season.

When USC does get good again, I wonder how much fan enthusiasm might be impacted by the fact that there are 2 NFL teams there now. Perhaps the interest during the Carroll years (other than them being really flashy and good) was a product of their being no professional football team in LA, so USC became that team.

Harrell's family is Football Royalty in Texas and I would assume that he has made recruiting ties in California. I can see him winning there.

This dude is the definition of a mediocre coach and boring at that. Bad move by USC keeping him another season.

Maybe his buyout was too much and they wanted to wait until next season when it is smaller?
