I understand that many people (mainly on the left) have an issue with people who use loopholes to lower their tax base. My question is: why is this wrong?

A loophole is simply a law that is in place that legally allows someone to lower their taxes. It is not illegal anf the IRS accepts it because it is a law.

Are people who use these loopholes not just abiding by the law?

It's not the use of the loophole.

It's the creation of it in the first place that's the issue.

These things don't just appear magically. They are proposed, lobbied for, and adopted, courtesy of the people benefitting.

That's why we want to see how MR has benefitted.

Well said. Do you think "loophole" was written in the constitution?

Because seeing he has benefited will prove he was the driver behind creating them? Gotcha.

It illuminates the problem of loopholes in the first place.

This election cycle, it makes Romney seem out of touch with the American voter.

It makes him seem as part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Correct.

He is the symbol of the imbalance and unfairness of tax laws in this country.

As someone on the "left" (relative to the rest of this forum), some loopholes represent special interest effect on a dysfunctional tax code written by a dysfunctional political system.

As long as Romney is working within the bounds of the law, I don't have any problem with him doing it and it doesn't affect my opinion one way or another of him as a candidate. I don't buy any of the "symbolism" nonsense, either he's for significant reform of the tax code or he's not.

agree completely. The fact that he pays more in taxes each year than 50% of the entire country combined is unfair

the total dollar amount he pays doesn't matter, it's the percentage that's important

Fair tax would fix many loopholes. However it would make my taxes go up.

it would be great, however, the FT would require the repeal of the 16th Amendment to happen first, which will never happen

At this point I would be happy to see income tax get reduced to a graduated rate from 0-9/10% income-dependent and the introduction of VAT.

I can't believe the bastard uses his church and charity contributions on his schedule A to reduce his AGI and in effect pay a lower percentage. On a serious note, I bet he gets hammered by alternative minimum tax each year.

You would be surprised at how many that do.
