USU Scrimmage Notes

I did some research on USU preparing for some betting action.

My takeaway is that we are going to solidly beat USU or this is going to be a nightmare 3-4 win season.

Keeton is a solid QB and a great QB for a mid-major. IMO, a lot of the hype for him comes from a very fluffy schedule. He is usually held in check (but still takes care of the football) in games vs quality opponents.

That all being said, their offense should take a major step backwards. They are losing the majority of their all-conference offensive line, their top 2 RBs, and their top 3 WRs. The practice reports of them being unable to score in scrimmage shouldn't surprise anyone - contain Keeton and you should be fine. With our undersized D-Line, I like this matchup.

On the defensive side, their team strength aside from QB is probably at D-Line and LB. But their secondary has been gutted. We're talking about a mass exodus. If North, Pig, Pearson, Malone, & Co are half of what they are hyped up to be, this is going to be a full-out air raid.

We should win this one by 14+. If somehow we manage a loss, we're talking about 3-4 wins max on the season.

Think about what you just said, my friend.

Keeton went 3-4 last year before injury. Keeton went 3-4 last year before injury. Keeton went 3-4 last year before injury.

His backup went 6-1. That backup posted a bunch of 3-and-outs in the scrimmage Tuesday.

Keeton ended his season with a losing record last year, just in case you didn't get that.

:hi:
The Utah State fan doesn't even know his own team. Keeton was 3-2 last year and got hurt in the 1st quarter of the 6th game against BYU so technically he was 3-3 as a starter but only played half a quarter that game. Vols contain him running and scrambling and they won't score more than 10 pts on our D. Not saying it will be a blowout because their front 7 is very good but we win safely.

Just from looking at stats I doubt that record is a fair reflection of his talent. His td/int was 18/3. The year before his record was 11-2.

Oh, I'm not saying he's a bad player and I don't doubt his talent. Though, I do laugh a bit at the references from USU fans that try to strike fear in the hearts of the UT faithful by referring to him as a "Heisman hopeful" last year.

A Heisman hopeful who had lost more games than he had won when he went down... Yah. The next Tebow.

My point was that against even a decent schedule, he was a loser. Without the cream pie that closed out their schedule last year, he was a loser. Without the likes of Hawaii, UNLV, Colorado St, Wyoming... He was a loser.

And I'd hoped that the USU fans who refuse to account for strength of schedule would have to come on here and defend Keeton's losing record last year by referencing "strength" of schedule (if you want to call it that) with reference to Utah, an anemic USU that was so atrocious that they wouldn't even give Kiffin a ride home from the airport when they fired him, BYU and Boise St.

Chucky for Heisman. Sorry. That's a laugher.

OK, then. He wasn't a loser--except against halfway decent opponents. I happily stand corrected.

Edit: What friggin kills me is the absolute trash talk Vols football is getting from programs at this level. There is no doubt that the past few years have been historically among the roughest the Vols have ever had, and they have yet to do anything to make anyone believe that a corner has been turned. But to have had the program sink down to a level that teams like Utah State and their fans now feel like they can come into Neyland and have a legitimate chance of winning...it's just hard to stomach.

Everyone looks at how the directional school from Alabalammaa came in last year and caused real problems for the Vols and they think they can easily do the same. The fear isn't there anymore.

What makes it even worse is that there have been major upgrades in the talent level all over the field, and I can see that the team this year is much farther along at this point than they were in year one...but no one is paying attention to that.

I realize that the respect and fear that used to be there has to be earned again. I really believe it will be...but I am impatient as hell for a return to the time when the thought of coming into Neyland Stadium to play Tennessee made teams like this **** their pants.

So yeah, I hope the Vols curb stomp them...and then use the rest of the season to show that they are most definitely on the way back to their place among the elite.

Funny thread.

On VN:

UT's coach makes media statements pushing our QBs and the place goes into meltdown mode.

USU's scrimmage produces a bunch of 3-and-outs, and VN makes excuses for them.

It's noble to be selfless and all. I guess.

Keeton taken a hit yet this year on that new and improved ligament? He back in proper form from last year, when he was losing as many as he was winning?

Please re-read my post. I said the team was 3-4 and then the defense rallied to save the season. They were 3-2 when Keeton got injured with blowout wins over Air Force, San Jose st, Weber st., and 3 point loss at USC and 5 point loss at utah.

The team then lost their next two games starting Craig Harrison and the defense wasn't playing that great either. True freshmen Garretson was put in at qb. The team then regrouped and the defense really came alive and went 6-1 after that (losing at Fresno in the MWC championship).

Everyone on this thread has struggles with reading comprehension.

I stand corrected. Mad respect for the defense that "came alive" against New Mexico, Hawaii, UNLV, Colorado, and Wyoming. Will they come alive the second game of 2014 against Idaho State too?

During that stretch utah st. played Colorado st and after the game Csu's QB said it was the toughest, hardest hitting defense he had ever seen, it was even tougher than Alabama's who they played earlier that season. (He said it not me so take your frustration in that comment out at him). I realize a decent chunk of players off that defense are gone, but there are a handful that remain.

No frustration for me. I hope you guys have a great year after the first game.

You're new here, so no reason you should know this, but any and all attempts to belittle or generally pizz on Alabama will be received warmly and in no way will cause frustration.

Words to live by: If you cant say anything good about Tennessee, say something bad about Alabama, Florida AND Vanderbilt.

Before you possibly feel too bad about your team if this game is actually close, I wanted to give some more info then what you are reading on paper.

Last year USU was hit harder than any team i've ever seen with injuries. Every single starter at a skill position on offense went down for the year for injury (lost 6 offensive starters), and one offensive lineman. Most the guys who replaced those starters are now back. USU was playing last season with a walk-on upperclassman and 2 star true freshmen QB, now these guys will have Keeton QB'ing them.

A handful of players on Defense were injured last year off and on too. At one point usu was playing being down 9 starters. USU's defense also rotates a lot of players in and out so these guys replacing those other players have seen solid minutes and showed well last year. The defense also returns their 2 best players (Fackrell and Vigil).

Just so you know, the way you felt when you were about to play those teams last year...that is how I feel going into week 1.

Is there any news on the players that were arrested during the off season? I saw that Natson played in the spring game.

Umm...I don't feel bad about my team. Don't know that anyone here has really said that.

You said if you don't blow out usu you are expecting a 3-4 win season. Is expecting a 3-4 win season not feeling bad about your team?

I said here is some info so you don't feel bad about your team in the event that this ends up actually being a close game.

Yes, it has been dealt with internally and they both will be playing.

Usu's coach did kick two players off the team this offseason who were projected starters on defense for this year (OLB and CB), and suspended another for the full year. So it makes me wonder what they did when natson and butler both won't be missing any game time.

Drugs maybe? That would make me wonder as well.

Sounds like USU is an outlaw program with a bunch of thugs ?

Well... we may not have been great last year, or even good, but one thing we certainly were good at was injuring other teams. :)
