Today on Tony Basilio's show they shared a remarkable statistical analysis which shows UT is getting far fewer whistles in SEC games than it did in non-conference play:

During out of conference play our Vols led the entire country in free throw attempts. In our out of conference games we shot 411 free throws in 15 games for an average of 27 per game. Our out of conference opponents shot 314 free throws for an average of 22 a game. We shot 5 more free throws per game than opponents out of conference.

In conference games we have shot 112 free throws for an average of 11 per game. Our opponents have shot 204 free throws for an average of 20 per game. In conference games we are shooting 16 free throws less per game than we were shooting out of conference. In conference games our opponents shoot 9 more free throws than us on average. Going even further, in conference, our opponents are averaging 4 more free throws than us at our place. Yet they shoot 7 more than us when we go on the road.

This discrepancy, if correct, is so striking that it almost makes one wonder if something tawdry is going on.

Good lord. 1. There are no such thing as "conference officials." 2. Ever think it might have something to do with teams figuring out that Tennessee is a pathetic perimeter shooting and backing off them to prevent drives to the basket, which is when fouls are drawn?

No. it's the officials.

doesn't matter, we would just miss a third of the shots anyway. players don't care about making free throws in the game today. all they want to do is shoot three's and dunk. this is not just tennessee, but all teams, for the most part.

Wisconsin and Villanova among others laugh at your assertion.

Yeah, because officials never call games on a bias.

Now that's just crazy talk

They also usually call games to where the aggressor gets the benefit of the doubt.

Whereas ignorant and lacksadaisical play doesn't.

Question is, where do we fall? Ill hang up and listen.

Also, don't underestimate the whining that a few of our "leaders" exhibit after each call.

Officials love that.

If there is no "conference officials" then how is Gerald Boudreaux, the SEC coordinator of basketball officials.

So, the same officials who were sending UT to the line at a staggering clip in November and early December just decided to start screwing Tennessee once league play started. Makes perfect sense.

He coordinates the independent contractors who officiate the SEC games. The officials aren't SEC employees.

I believe it's more of a regional thing. Obviously more prestigious conferences get the better officials. Like a gladiator in Rome. As it were.

I've seen referees live at Atlantic Sun games one night and then seen them on TV a few nights later calling an SEC game.

Explanations, besides hat's:

1) Insignificant sample size.

2) Vols played much better in early season than in midseason.

3) No CBP for 8 of your first 10 conference games.

4) Vols playing recklessly, rather than aggressively in the right spots, especially as they have fallen further behind the SECe lead.

5) Seems like both sets of numbers are down from OOC to conference play: officials allowing harder physical play? They always seem to when tournament play begins. That's why teams with size underneath tend to rise to the top.

Guys work pretty much every game they can get, regardless of league. You'll see guys do an Ivy League game on Friday, a Big East game on Saturday, and an A-10 game on Sunday.

I can only assume that made for some great radio, I am going to agree with the teams watching film/figuring the offense out theory.

Ten games is enough to see a trend.

2) Vols played much better in early season than in midseason.

Doesn't explain it

3) No CBP for 8 of your first 10 conference games.

I could buy that for maybe a five foul swing.

4) Vols playing recklessly, rather than aggressively in the right spots, especially as they have fallen further behind the SECe lead.

Doesn't explain it.

5) Seems like both sets of numbers are down from OOC to conference play: officials allowing harder physical play? They always seem to when tournament play begins. That's why teams with size underneath tend to rise to the top.

Again, that might explain a five or so foul difference. Not 10+.

That's probably right. I mean, no way those out of conference teams had any idea whatsoever of how a Bruce Pearl team runs an offense since he overhauls it every season. Plus no way that incompetent staff at Pitt with that clown for a head coach could get a clue from Tennessee's first few games because Bruce was sandbagging. Absolutely nobody had enough time to figure them out out until conference play started. What horrible timing!

Either way, these numbers are alarming and are the root for all TN problems.

lolwut?!?

Were they the root of all our problems in December?
Are they taking into account the cupcakes we played in our OOC schedule?
Has FT disparity actually had an obvious effect on previous games that we won?
Do quality teams have an easier time drawing fouls against us?
Couldn't an average of fouling 5 more times a game be attributed to a team fouling more?

Jesus. The reason we don't get foul calls is because we settle for jumpers the vast majority of the time because teams are inviting us to shoot them. When we start attacking the rack consistently, we'll get some free throws. This kind of thread really is sad.
