UT And SEC Officiating

In 10 games against teams with a Top 50 RPI, we have shot less FT's 7 times.

Well, there is clearly some sort of wide-ranging conspiracy then. Couldn't possibly be that we don't run an offense that enables to attack the rack and get to the line. That's outside the realm of possibility.

(1) I know that there are not SEC officiating crews, as there are in football.

(2) No, I don't believe there is some grand SEC conspiracy to target Tennessee.

BUT, that statistical discrepancy is way too large to explain away by sample size or other common reasons. If we did statistical modeling that would have to be like three or more standard deviations from what one would expect by chance.

Something's really weird about that. And, as the stats show, we aren't even getting half the calls at home. How many top-50 teams do you think have that dubious distinction?

That's probably right. I mean, no way those out of conference teams had any idea whatsoever of how a Bruce Pearl team runs an offense since he overhauls it every season. Plus no way that incompetent staff at Pitt with that clown for a head coach could get a clue from Tennessee's first few games because Bruce was sandbagging. Absolutely nobody had enough time to figure them out out until conference play started. What horrible timing!

Since you put it that way, the bias by officials makes much more sense. Damn you SEC.
Its not like Pitt shot 13 more free throw than the vols that game, or the vols hit 6 of 8 threes in the first half, and only shot 3 the entire second half.

I don't buy that there's a conspiracy by the officials against Tennessee, however, I do believe the lack of free throw attempts is a serious issue that needs to be corrected.

look at our losses and look at the ft's i do not think it is the officals, yes it might have been in some games but most has not been good coaching or bad shot selection.

Statistics are meaningless without good interpretation and context. Basilio provided neither.

Haha, wasn't claiming a wide-spread conspiracy. Just claiming that the quality of team might have more to do with the free throw discrepancy than the officials.

A lot of the blame lies with the way we run flex offense in general. We do a lot of dribbling out top and standing around.

No bias by a league but its no major secret that some refs are chummy with some coaches and others not so much. Eades for example, both of them, blow whistles in favor of UT competition about 70% of the time including fouls but also 50/50 balls etc.

That might be more prevalent than I want to believe for sure.

Can a high profile coach's opinion have an influence over what officials are assigned which games?

I heard that they even trip our players, so we'll turn the ball over 20 times a game.

Our offensive philosophy is not significantly different now than it was in December.

Then, as now, we play both crummy and good teams.

Why are we shooting 16 less free throws a game?

Hamilton has filed two complaints against Tom Eades. Two seasons ago he didn't call a UT game the rest of the season after the complaint but his next game back he T'd up Bruce. Eades has T'd up Bruce more than any other and its not even close.

Pretty dumb thread all and all (not directed at OP, who was merely passing a story along).

Yea, I wasn't aiming that post at you. It was aimed at the others here claiming conspiracy. My apologies if you thought I was referring to you. :hi:

lolwut?!?

Were they the root of all our problems in December?
Are they taking into account the cupcakes we played in our OOC schedule?
Has FT disparity actually had an obvious effect on previous games that we won?
Do quality teams have an easier time drawing fouls against us?
Couldn't an average of fouling 5 more times a game be attributed to a team fouling more?

Cupcakes? You do know we have the #1 SOS in the country, soley because of our OOC schedule right? Just about everyone of those cupcakes is leading their respective leagues.

I heard a stat today that Tennessee is 99-148 from the line. The Vols rank last in the league in free throw attempts and last in free throws made.

By comparison, Vanderbilt has made 202 free throws so far this season.

That's what running a disciplined motion offense will do for you.
