UT Dead Last in FBS - Impressive Stat

Our OL will either be better next year (by a lot) or the writing is on the wall for the staff. There's no way that the group of players we had were the very worst group in the entire nation skill/body wise. Also, it doesn't take 2 or 3 years for S/C to work. You should actually see huge gains and see them fairly quickly.
.
Playing in the SEC with what we fielded will make your numbers look really bad. If you swap UTs OL with APSUs and play the schedules out do they come out the same way? More than likely not. The competition change will change the outcomes.

In regards to S/C. Starting point plays as much into the picture as anything. The elite level HS players are coming in typically more physically developed than the lower guys. Both can make gains at the same pace, but the more developed guy from the start will stay ahead. We haven't signed many of them lately. I dont think people realize how bad the S/C program was under the Band guy. It was a major issue tied into player development.
After Trey went out we looked like we were in a 5 TE set on every down.
If UT lands Wright along with Morris the starting point physically will change by comparison to several of the current OLs on the roster and the finished product will come sooner than a weak 275 lb guy that needs 2 years. They ll still be FR but starting from a different place than some guys that have been here under 2 staffs.

2018 NCAA OFFENSIVE LINE STATS | Football Outsiders

What is really amazing isn't just that we are last in this category, but the margin by which we are. All other 129 fbs teams are in a range of 10.2% (Wisconsin) to 26.6%. That is a 16.4% range total. But, there we are way out in left field another 6% from our nearest neighbor at a whopping 32.6%. Yes, a full third of our runs were stopped right at the LOS or behind. That is insane.

What's even worse? Of the last 4 years they've been tracking the stat, no one has reached our level. Next closest was 28.7%, not even close! Suck it 2017 Texas State!

We can only go up from here!
Not gonna lie I chuckled when I read this..oh the misery lol

I wonder what the guys on the OL and the coaches think of this stat. Embarrassed? Ashamed? Determined? You know they have been told of this surely. If not, then they should be made aware of this immediately. If this doesn’t scream a sense of urgency nothing does.

Let's be honest...alot of this is just plain bad coaching. There is no way in he!! a program like UT should have this bad of a line. So many have made of fun of Mike Leach...as if we are soooo above someone like him. "He's goofy"...."he's weird" etc etc. Wasn't Spurrier "weird"....and "goofy"? I'm sitting here watching Leach in a bowl game taking his 13th ranked team to an 11-2 record....with probably half the talent we have recruited these past 4 years. Ohhh but noooooo. Can't have a guy like Leach. We're UT man. We have much higher standards than to hire a goofball like that. Pffft. Meanwhile we sit on our high horse at 5-7 while Leach wraps up another bowl win with an 11 win team. I'm sorry... it just ticks me off that this was a coach that wanted to be here...and I know it has a lot to do with his personality that he isn't here. Can't have "weirdos" like him coaching the great UT can we?...... BS.

Here's a stat for you UT dead first in FBS....
( Fan Bull S**t ) a whopping 72.8 %.

It's coaching. We get so wrapped up in recruiting rankings and 4 and 5 star players...and as I mentioned Mike Leach above let's compare recruiting classes:
UT Washington State
2014 5 69
2015 5 55
2016 15 52
2017 15 51
2018 20 46

source; Rivals

My gawd. The highest ranked class Leach has had in the last 5 years was 46th....and here he is winning a bowl game... ranked 13th in the country with an 11 win team....and we sit here watching bowl games instead of playing in one at 5-7. This disparity in talent walking into UT and Wash St. is MASSIVE. The past is the past...and we have a new coach in Pruitt and he deserves a fair shot...and he'll get it.

Yeah, but have you seen Guarantano stare at his receiver?

In all honesty, it doesn't surprise me in the least. We'd have lost 6 games with Peyton at QB and Lewis at tailback this year. Our line IS that bad.

The fact that we won @Auburn, and beat Kentucky in Neyland will perplex the hell out of me for some time.

It’s absolutely coaching. Here’s one good example:

Vols got the same punt formation penalty 3 TIMES IN 1 QUARTER

It is coaching, but thankfully we are going into year two with this staff. I think we all expect this oline and offense to improve and be more consistent. Not saying top 25 offense at all, but we need our offense to ( more consistently than last year ) pull their own weight and get some first downs, and shrink the game, give our defense a breather/time to think, and put a few more points on the board next year.

I agree with everything you wrote except the word “expect”. I would say “want” because there has been nothing, as of today, that would suggest an improved offensive line.

I see what you are saying, but I will stick with expect. I truly do expect this oline and offense to make some improvement in year two. Like I said, not expecting anything great, but I am expecting an improvement over what I saw last year. Second year of strength and conditioning under Pruitt and staff, second year under cjp&s fundamentals, possibly second year of same scheme. Now, if we go more spread/read option/RPO, the offense may struggle some learning and adjusting but it will eventually click and pay off imo. There is a reason most successful offenses are running the spread and not as much of the traditional power run game. Even Nick saban has switched to more of a spread offense, and the switch/install began when he had lane kiffin. They saw the benefits and made the switch. Saban also saw first hand his defense ( a very talented and we'll coached defense I might add ) get their butts handed to them twice against Clemson's spread attack while Watson was taking snaps. Go back and look at the points and stats Clemson put up in those two title games.

This stat points out what we have all been howling about for this same length of time. (and a little longer) No O-line, period. Which brings me to two more thoughts...

1. Do any of us think any QB could function in this environment? Let alone the average guys we have had?

2. would any OC be able to devise a offense facing this handicap? Or for that matter would any "really good" OC come here with this career threatening mess facing him? (regardless of the money)
A QB with the capacity to read the field would get to the edge, plant and throw. The current coaches and players should prepare for this irregardless. Receivers would practice adding an additional move to their routes. I see this done in many games by a lot of teams on a weekly basis. I'm forced to applaud JG simply because he has no wheels? The main difference between JG and Dobbs.

Assuming this stat is legit, three points.
1. I would hate to be an OL player thinking about NFL and have this stat hanging on my record. That will look good on draft day.
2. I would hate to be on OL line coach and have to explain this stat to a prospective recruit in front of their parents. Especially if the parents thought their son had a shot at the Pros.
3. I would hope Coach P would pay attention to this stat. He should hate having this stat hanging on his record.

I still like Coach P!!! GBO!!!

UT has effectively ruined football for me. Will I ever stop pulling for them or supporting them, hell no. I still support Pruitt because you have to give him some time. I think what disappoints me about this season was losses to south carolina and vandy. I mean virginia tore up south carolina and vandy was beaten by baylor. The argument that the SEC is just that much better then everybody else doesn't hold water. If you say that alabama is just that much better then everybody else, I guess you have an argument. We will see what happens between Texas and uga.
