Have read on here a long time and post very little, but here's my first thread, hope some see and agree with the point being made. I have read good post, bad post, and alot of post that just really have little to do about anything, but this is the cold hard truth! I have liked CBJ long before his name was announced as our HC and he made a point from the get go that I believe alot of fans have let go right by them.

We have a "Coach" that knows exactly what that term means. He said it himself, that along with his staff, they will teach the game of "Life" and "Football" to these young men. Haters complain about how few stars he has recruited, well, stars are not need if you can see talent and shape and mold it to fit your system. I believe they will do it and he has already proved he is the man for this job! He has brought guys with him that teach his way and already got more guys that bring that it factor, and is close to bringing another back Home to us.

Believe it, We will be back soon! A great techer can bring the very best out of a student if they are willing to put forth the effort. It doesn't matter if we end up 5th or 25th in recruiting, CBJ will mold the talent he has got and will get. Look at his track record...he is a WINNER and that what all of need is a leader that is a WINNER and get us back where we belong! Go Big Orange!

I hope CBJ succeeds and takes TN back to the promise land as much as anyone. But if anyone thinks that he will beat the likes of Bama, FL, GA, or LSU by coaching up a bunch of lower ranked players, they're in for a rude awakening. Recruiting is the lifeblood of a program and if UT doesn't recruit at the highest levels he will not win.

Good post Op but InVol is right.

System coaches can work in other conferences. They can win alot of games and win their championships...then they get mud stomped by some sec team in a BCS bowl.

I like the idea of being able to coach up kids and develop talent. The problem I see with trying to do that in the SEC is if your taking 2-3 star kids and coaching them up, usually the teams stocked with 4-5 star talent will still destroy you on the field. Coaching up can only do so much. When the guys across from you are bigger, faster, and stronger, it's going to be tough. I hope this "best staff in the country" claim comes to prove at least respectable. When I heard CBJ say that in the presser I was excited to see who was hired. It made sense we would go after some big time assistant names as we saved alot of money on the HC hired IMO. When I see the staff names now, I just can't get overly excited. Alot of unknowns and coaches who were fired recently. I am looking forward to 2013 and seeing UT back to playing football. I am just not going to allow myself to expect much yet. We shall see how it all plays out.

Exactly...people get hung up way to much on trying to get 4-5 Star players and if you don't land enough you're a failure. Petersen is a prime example of that's not the case. We'll just have to wait and see but he's got to sell the system and beliving in it to both future and current players. The first year might be bumpy.

I never said we had a staff that would recruit just absolutely terrible! We went toe to toe with a lot thinner roster, a couple of years ago against Bama, when Kiffen was here. Why? Like or not Kiffen can COACH! We took Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina to the wire with a bum coaching staff and no game plan and no defense! Like or or not, Coaching is the key in this game. All the talent in the world will no help you if your coach does not know how to coach!

I would agree that coaching is a key part but your OP made it sound like you thought that coaching was all that. Everyone thought that the team Kiffin had was sparce but I would argue while the numbers were down, it had more talent than even now. I could also make the case that the team Dooley inherited was more talented than now. Not as deep but heavier at the top. If you go back and look, Dooley was more competitive his first year than he was his second and in turn his third.

I think the reason we took Alabama to the wire that year was because Kiffin could get the players to play with emotion, with fire. I don't think Dooley got everything out of his players. This comes back to coaching. I will still contend that "It's not about the X's and O's as much as it is about the Jimmys and the Joes".

jmo...I put him in the the Mumme or Woodenhoffer catagory. Good system and recruit good enough to put your best athletes on that side of the ball and try to win with it. Patrino is just alittle better at it.

Peterson is a great coach no doubt but he would get throttled in the SEC. His teams have to be good one or two times a year. JMO

Never meant for it to seem like I was beating a dead horse. I do agree that you must have talent, but if you can't use it you will lose it. You are right on about the kids playing inspired as well. They never played with fire under Dooley. All they need to do is watch the Patriots (that I hate), they still get excited even when they are up by 30. That is definately needed. Most Definately!

Best coaching staff in the country was a lie. The recruiting is going to suffer. Strike one against Jones.

Strike two will be when Bray and Hunter leave.

Lack of a top 15 class is number three. I think that would count as starting off on the wrong foot.

I cannot believe all of the sunshine pumping over names like Jancek and Mark Elder.

I don't find Bray and Hunter leaving as a strike. This year, it seemed like Hunter was gun shy and dropped more than he caught, easy catches at that. Bray also just never seemed to take on the leadership role out on the field like he should have with as many chances as he had to do so.

I don't think Hunter leaving is a strike. I think he was gone regardless. CP was gone regardless also. I would like to see how Bray would have done under a coach that he respected. I think under the right coach that would'nt put up with his antics, Bray couuld be the superstar that we all thought he could be. Bray has the physical tools but his problems were between his ears. He was/is never affraid of the consequences of his foolishness.

As to the top 15 recruiting, that is yet to be seen one way or another. The sad part is a 15 ranked class usually puts you middle of the SEC. I hope CBJ can coach up up!

I agree with you totally! They both looked as if they were only playing for themselves. The vols have not had a team leader in a long time as well. We do need a field general and I don't care if its the center. Al Wilson kept all of Vol Nation pumped when he was here.

And I concur with you...we need someone out there to take control of the game as well as to get the crowd back into it. We are the 12th man of the team and there have been times it would have helped the Vols to make some noise, but we were so beaten down lately it was hard to do so, especially when we saw the players on the field damn near phoning it in at times.

He did recruit well. He didn't recruit elite, like Saban , Miles, Meyer. Then, he didn't win the whole shebang either, but there's no doubt Petrino's ability as a play caller is second to none.

I guarantee that CBJ understands that he needs to recruit at the top if he wants to win in this league, and I think that's reflected in his hires thus far (Thigpen, Martinez, going after Tee)... elite SEC recruiters.
