UT Has A Coaching Staff

he did recruit well. He didn't recruit elite, like saban , miles, meyer. Then, he didn't win the whole shebang either, but there's no doubt petrino's ability as a play caller is second to none.

I guarantee that cbj understands that he needs to recruit at the top if he wants to win in this league, and i think that's reflected in his hires thus far (thigpen, martinez, going after tee)... Elite sec recruiters.

exactly!

Good post Op but InVol is right.

System coaches can work in other conferences. They can win alot of games and win their championships...then they get mud stomped by some sec team in a BCS bowl.

The SEC is almost like the minor leagues of the NFL. And the NFL has long been known as a 'player driven' league. Any coach in the NFL will tell you they can only do so much if they don't have the horses to do work with. Same can be said about the SEC. You can be the best x's and o's coach in the league, best motivator, etc., But if you don't have the horses you will never be a major player in this league.

I don't think Hunter leaving is a strike. I think he was gone regardless. CP was gone regardless also. I would like to see how Bray would have done under a coach that he respected. I think under the right coach that would'nt put up with his antics, Bray couuld be the superstar that we all thought he could be. Bray has the physical tools but his problems were between his ears. He was/is never affraid of the consequences of his foolishness.

As to the top 15 recruiting, that is yet to be seen one way or another. The sad part is a 15 ranked class usually puts you middle of the SEC. I hope CBJ can coach up up!
I had top 10 recruiting class, but I thought that was hard to expect in 1.5 months w/o already having an in with top players. I would expect a great coach to keep Hunter and Bray here, seeing as how their draft stock has fallen considerably since beginning of the year, 2nd rd and 3rd rd, respectively.

A great recruiter would be able to sell them on coming back and being 1st rounders next year. Wouldnt even have to be Jones, just somebody.

The only thing is Hunter will not be able to improve his draft stock by playing safe as he did this year. Bray doesn't fit his system. Also, I expect Hunters stock to improve again at the combine. I wouldn't be surprised if he went in the first round. Mel Kiper Jr. STill has Justin Hunter as his overall number 2 pick to the Miami Dolphins. That is from November so it could have changed.

Best coaching staff in the country was a lie. The recruiting is going to suffer. Strike one against Jones.

Strike two will be when Bray and Hunter leave.

Lack of a top 15 class is number three. I think that would count as starting off on the wrong foot.

I cannot believe all of the sunshine pumping over names like Jancek and Mark Elder.

bray & hunter are leaving regardless so wtf are u talking about

Who knows. Would YOU draft Hunter #2? I sure wouldnt!

We have possibly a replacement for Bray but not Hunter AND Patterson. Pig Howard aint the answer. But back to the subject of this thread: this coaching staff sucks.

I was willing to give Jones the benefit of the doubt for about 5 minutes, and now see this &%^% going
on. Hey guys, lets spend at least $3 million for coaches and we will get the best staff in the country! Yeah! (we'll just give this all to guy's I already had on staff at Cincy though hehe cause they are already the bestestest.

Me and you are on the same boat. I am so cynical about UT football I only expect the worst. I am neither for or against Jones at this point. Thank goodness all UT fans aren't as apathetic as I am because Neyland will be 1/2 full next year. I am of the opinion that I believe CBJ was right for Tennessee when I see wins on the field. I am not talking about beating WKU or whatever other loser team on the schedule, I am talking about beating a quality SEC team.

If you do no think that this is a good coaching staff, You have no buisness discussing football. Not every coach started on the top of the mountain like half the posters on here believe. Great coaches worked their way up the ladder. The 5 minutes you used should have went toward looking at his track record. Then use the next 5 to see where ALL the Stoops brothers come from, Jim Tressel, Charlie Strong, John Gruden! All of these guys worked from the bottom up. By the Way, 3 million WILL NOT get the best staff in the country, it will get guys that is on track with CBJ! Thats a group of guys that want to be and have been winners. Let the man work. He may just suprise you!

the point, football genius, is that you don't have to hire unprovens to make the best staff in the country.

did Walmart let you exchange your doolaid for jones sunshine soda straight up? must be powerful stuff

If Coach BJ can get the "show me" wins then I think recruiting will improve. You go a long time between winning and going bowling the quality of players you get slides and so does the "winning" attitude and the actual "wins" themselves. We see how a major college program struggles in college football--a lot of programs go through just what we have been--but I think it will get better.

First and foremost, I was never a Dooley fan, thought he was a bad hire from the start. Also, never claimed to be a football genius, not balls to the wall on the entire staff by no means either. I believe CBJ is a real good coach and will surround himself with good coaches. I don't think he would have kept these guys through 2 jobs if they didn't or couldn't get it done. Just look back at Auburns recruiting the last few years and it will tell the tale as to why he got those guys from Auburn. Point being, give the man a chance, all signs point to positive. Whereas Dooley's only sign read Exit!

Look at what Dooley has on the board in commitments.Mostly 3 stars which is fine for bottom tear SEC.In reading several bio s most aren't real hot prospects that isn't to say Coach Jones can't coach them up which is something DD did very little of if any.Change is tough Dooley dug a huge hole for us.

I believe he was too! Everyone else was scared of the situation we are in! He jumped in head first and hasn't hesitated a bit. That is the reason I am high on him, and that he is a WINNER!

well, we also can't expect Tennessee to automatically jump up in recruiting. Recruits always drop off when a team has a coaching change. If CBJ gets Tennessee to 8 or 9 wins he will gradually go up the rankings in recruiting. They still have 17 great players committed. Besides, we never know how good a player can actually be until we see him face the best talent in the Nation in the SEC. These recruits are ranked by humans who have opinions about wether they are 3, 4 or 5 star worthy. These high school seniors could have put up a lot of stats on weak opponents. Then he looks like a 5 star. Many 5 star athletes fail or fall off the map, or go to a school that is already 4 deep at his respective position. He may never even see playing time. Look at Arian Foster, he was not a 5 star Running back and he started for Tennessee and now look what he is doing in the NFL. Judging thousands of high school players is a lot harder than judging 25 contestants on American Idol. I don't think Johnny Manziel was a 5 star and he turned the Aggies into a contender in his freshman season and won a heisman. Point is, we don't always need so many 5 star athletes to be a winner. USC has been recruiting several 5star athletes the past few years, even while on suspension and they went 7-5. So, it depends on the coaching too. Lane Kiffin can't win with a team full of 5 star athletes. Meanwhile Nick Saban doesn't lose with less 5 stars than USC. We can't expect Jones to do what Sumlin did with Texas A&M this year. 6-6 last year under Sherman to 10-2 this year with Sumlin and a team full of mostly 3 and 4 star players. Texas recruits more 5 star athletes than A&M and look who did better this year. That will be changing though because the Aggies were smart and joined the SEC. We may only go 7-5 in 2013 but, it's a good start. It will mean a bowl appearance. Then maybe 9 or more wins in 2014. I don't think Jones can do any worse than Dooley did. He won't last past 1 season if he goes 4-8 or worse. But, I'm positive he will get us winning again.
