I've been told there's a real need for student housing on campus. Might as well kill two birds with one stone.
More student housing is ridiculously in need. Plus many of existing dorms are in really poor condition and are over 60 years old. For example, Massey is in need of being imploded—cant even get hot water in the “community“ bathrooms on each floor. Community areas on each floor have been converted to dorm rooms. They are busting at the seams.

OMG, I run a summer undergrad research program where we have always housed students in Vol Hall, which is pretty nice because it was originally built as an apartment complex. One year UT housing wanted to show me alternatives and gave me a tour of Hess Hall. OMG, I could not believe how despicable that place was, what a dump!!!

I lived in Hess a little. I was in the lobby a few years ago and remarked how it it had been improved, @Volprofch05 🤪

I hope they fixed it up after I toured it RBF. The funny thing was that they usually have desks on the bottom and beds on top there. However, they had a summer program with young kids that forced them to put the beds on the bottom (liability) and had these totally useless desks on top that were not accessible 🤣

Sorry for getting off topic but your comment made me think about the strip. The university is killing the atmosphere on the “strip” as they closed down two or more bars and restaurants over the holidays to make space for new Apts. There are two primary bars on the strip now, and the cover is $50 for the main one, unless you are an athlete.

As a parent whose son attends UT, I like the idea of less bars. On the other hand, students may now drive to the old city since they can’t walk to the strip. My son loves the strip and actually talks to a lot of the athletes - Milton, Vescovi, ZZ and walk in wide receivers. Anyway, I will stop venting.

I agree that the strip is far less appealing now for entertainment and pre-game gathering. The options are just limited, and we’ve enjoyed going for football games that are early starts.

However, unless someone wants to explain otherwise, I am not aware of the university changing it. Although close, the university doesn’t have property on either side. These are private businesses that are selling property and building new things. Because of the housing shortage, apartment companies are interested. Plus, mixed use buildings (retail on bottom and residential on top) are very popular right now in suburban settings.

If a dorm is built there, I hope our coeds will be fair-minded and not be doing thing outside their windows that might distract opposing batters.
