The more I read and hear about Coach Jones & staff, the harder it is to rein in my expectations for this season.

What makes players so certain that this summer’s progress will lead to something different? Echoing first-year coach Butch Jones, they’re not promising a certain number of wins, but simply a more consistent and effective process. That input will ultimately lead to a better output, they say.

“That’s when you have to just focus on the process,” said offensive lineman James Stone. “Coach Jones and the staff, they’ve laid out a proven process on how you go about becoming a winning football team. You can’t really worry about last season. Just focus on the process of what develops winning teams. If you do it every day, you’re going to get better every day.”

“This year I feel like we have a much better handle on the defense,” sophomore free safety Brian Randolph said during Wednesday’s preseason press conference at Neyland Stadium.

That handle, Randolph and senior defensive end Corey Miller explained, is a product of coaching familiarity.

“They’re definitely all on the same page,” Miller said. “One might call a play and the other one knows exactly what’s going on the back end and from the back to the front to the middle.”

It is fine to talk about the process, most leaders will do that. But, you have to have a good process in place. That is the difference between this year and the last 3--Jones' actual process is proven to make championship teams.

Honestly, what do you expect them to say? Annually buying into this mutual admiration/lovefest between whichever player and whichever coach has got to stop. Results have got to be demanded.

I believe we will have a winning season this year. The talent is there to pull it off.

I get nauseated at the word "process"

I hear ya. However, I think the difference is that CBJ has one that has been proven to work and is able to communicate it to the team. After the fact, I believe the only one that understood Dooley's process was Dooley and I'm not 100% convinced of that.

Fair enough, but it's good to see the players are optimistic.

Besides, Butch gets it

The gator is bringing some truth up in here. When people talk about the "process" they usually lose me when they tell us not to focus on the results. Results get coaches fired or given extensions. Results get you to bowl games and championships. A process is only as good as the results.

this +1000 the problem with Volnation is they love to talk about he gets it.. but refuse to demand results they prefer the he loves tn approach so give him time..

if he really gets it 8 wins should be expected this year because tn cant afford another 6 n 6 n then 7 wins in year 2. thats not results or progress.

That's why I think this team will overachieve. I'm not saying we go 10-2 but 8-4 would not shock me at all with this team.

Of course he is going to need some time. I'd give him 3 years, and probably 4. Seems to be the real deal.

I'm just distinguishing that from the notion that some players in a press conference saying that CBJ is doing a good job = points on the scoreboard.

You go look at pre-camp comments from any program in the country. They all say these things. Means nada.

And here we have a perfect example of irrational exuberance. How you tick off two more wins because of a quote on twitter is beyond me.

Don't be an ass. I didn't say we WOULD go 8-4. I just said 8-4 wouldn't shock me. I think losses to Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Oregon, along with an upset to a South Carolina (I think they're overrated) is not out of the realm of possibility. Where do I think we finish? 7-5 along with (hopefully) a bowl victory! We finished 7-5 in 2009 while starting 2 walk ons on the OL and 1 former walk on as our middle linebacker! Don't tell me this team can't do better!

Not sure I read that right. You think South Carolina beating UT would be an upset?

Me too, fade. Fortunately--and I may be forecasting here--I think we're not going to have to focus on the "process" too much longer. IMO, CBJ has all the right pieces laid out to be successful. We just need to up our overall talent some more (starting with next years class) and execute. I'm confident that the results will come--much more so than with the previous two coaches.
