Stripling on what he looks for in defensive linemen: "We are going to look for athletic young men that can defend their gap, that can put pressure on the quarterback with a four-man rush and that have the ability to get off blocks because we know in every conference in the country that they hold. That is the kind of player that we are looking for, the playmakers."

Depth at DE is a big issue, hopefully Walls and Saulsberry can be flexible enough to give us some quality backups. Otherwise LaTroy Lewis may have to convert to DL, which he may have played in high school but I can't remember.

Is it just me or does it seem that 2014 will be another down year with so many OL and DL players leaving?

So pretty much since coach Chavis.

I remember when many people wanted to get rid of Chavis because he was horrible. Now that we have had a chance to compare him to Monte Kiffin, who gave up over 200 yards to one running back at Ole Miss. We can also compare him to Wilcox, who didn't have many good players on defense. We can also compare Chavis to Sal, who was over his head as a co ordinator. I honestly believe that Sal coached the worse defensive performance by a team by in U.T. history.

Now, we can say that Chavis was not horrible and that if we had the chance to get him on staff again, we would.

"Chavis is no good or else he would have been offered a better job, while on the Fulmer staff"

"Chavis is usually in a prevent defense and gives games away"

Couple thoughts:

If two of the four step up (O'brien, Saulsberry, Carson, Clark) I will feel better. If we get no production from these guys we will be hurting for 2014.

Also, what is with Marlon Walls? He must be an average player, because he is a senior now and he hasn't shown me anything. Could this be his year?

dj hall played WR at alabubba.

Hey, you're right!

...

But I think the point was that he lit up John Chavis' defense for 13 catches and 185 yards in 2007, since the OP alluded to Monte's defense allowing McCluster to gain over 280 yards on the ground in 2009.

I heard a high school coach say the same thing. This is coach rhetoric.

2013 may be the worst yet. New coach, new system, lost our offensive threat and the defense already sucked.

If BJ can wrangle 6-6 I'll be impressed.

And it feels like he's been here for 10 years!

Willing to bet Corey Miller and Jacques Smith start....then you still have Jordan Williams, Latroy Lewis possibly, Jason Carr, Jaylen Miller....not exactly stacked but plenty of depth to get by

I will be 51 when the Big Orange hits the field this year, thinking might not live long enough to see us back at the top.
