UT spring position preview: Defensive line

Willing to bet Corey Miller and Jacques Smith start....then you still have Jordan Williams, Latroy Lewis possibly, Jason Carr, Jaylen Miller....not exactly stacked but plenty of depth to get by

Technically yes, but I hate the idea of freshmen on either line.

We could field a good line, the potential is definately there. Depth is what will kill us as it has the past several seasons. Couch needs to man up and become the player we all thought we was getting with him when he signed.

Depth at DE is a big issue, hopefully Walls and Saulsberry can be flexible enough to give us some quality backups. Otherwise LaTroy Lewis may have to convert to DL, which he may have played in high school but I can't remember.

Didn't read the article, but if they are claiming Lewis is a LB and not a DE in a 4-3 they are wrong. This was further evidenced by the fact that the volympics draft after the first round was done by position. Lewis went with the defensive linemen (selected right after Hood and before Jacques Smith).

I remember when many people wanted to get rid of Chavis because he was horrible. Now that we have had a chance to compare him to Monte Kiffin, who gave up over 200 yards to one running back at Ole Miss. We can also compare him to Wilcox, who didn't have many good players on defense. We can also compare Chavis to Sal, who was over his head as a co ordinator. I honestly believe that Sal coached the worse defensive performance by a team by in U.T. history.

Now, we can say that Chavis was not horrible and that if we had the chance to get him on staff again, we would.

"Chavis is no good or else he would have been offered a better job, while on the Fulmer staff"

"Chavis is usually in a prevent defense and gives games away"

I feel like saying Sal was "in over his head" is doing a great disservice to the phrase.

Interesting, because I must be the only one who thinks we're gonna have a real good defensive line.

WDE- J. Smith, L. Lewis
DT- T. Saulsberry, M. Couch, M. Walls
DT- D. Mac, D O'Brien, D. Hood
SDE-J. Williams, C. Miller, M. Walls

That might not be the exact line up but we've got bodies. We've also got some pretty good players in there. D. Mac, LaTroy Lewis, Jordan Williams, Traveras Saulsberry....I think these dudes are ball players. As for the underachievers; Walls, Couch, Miller...they've not lived up to their billing IMO, but from a pure depth standpoint I can see them being useful.

Disagree on Couch, yes was not very impressive as a 3-4 end last year, but if you remember back to the 2012 from about the Bama game on as a 4-3 DT that was far from the case

Yes I remember , He played pretty good ball down the stretch. Nothing more nothing less IMO. As for this past season, I understand the move to the 3-4. But I continue to see Bama d-lineman dominate from a 3-4 scheme. And I don't think it's unreasonable for me to expect a 5* DL to be a force...even if in the 3-4. I'm not talking from a statistical standpoint. But I've been a bit disappointed in what we've gotten from Couch thus far. I think he'll have a good season this year in the 4-3. But I've seen nothing that makes me think he's a shoe in to start. But it's all a matter of opinion at this point.

Not exactly Bruce Smith and Reggie White starting at the ends....:whistling:

I think people are looking too much into last year....Smith will be a solid pass rusher....i also feel miller will be a good DE.....everyone wants to say we didn't get any pressure on the QB last year...we also had DEs without a hand in the dirt and a pass coverage that had holes everywhere because apparently sunseri just wanted them to guess what we were running

LatroyLewis is at 248 now. He stated so today. Also when heather asked tiny who in his opinion would likely emerge as a surprise threat on defense this year he singled out Lewis

Hood must be close to 30:rock:
